4.0 out of 5 stars Don 16 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
One word sums up this film. Ludicrous. What makes it so ludicrous makes it so thoroughly watchable. The opening scene of Amitabh Bachchan in a pair of huge specs and a large bow tie sets the tone. Everything is so in-your-face and huge. The wigs, the songs, the colourful sets and the plot.

Amitabh is in a double role as Don - a ruthless and much-feared gangland boss - and as Vijay - a down to earth street singer who has to unexpectedly infiltrate the gang and pass himself off as Don after the real Don is killed. The other big characters include the vengeful vamp, the past -it hard done by tightrope walker come small time crook (complete with ginger wig, satin 2 piece and large white belt around the paunch) and the joker in the pack - one character who isn't all he seems...

This is a real deal "guns cars and sitars" adventure which will have you both gripped and laughing out loud at the stunts and dialogue. The director seems to have really had a ball throwing in all he could to keep this from ending up an overly earnest crime thriller.

A couple of the actual songs are amazing, the rest are pretty pedestrian. The best song is picturised in a hotel room with veteran star Helen attempting to seduce Amitabh with a wild dance. It's the background score which is most thrilling of all. Disco and funk pop up all over the place and the theme tune is raw brownsploitation.

The only complaint is there are no real great extras on the DVD -not even a theatrical trailer - I'm inclined to say it doesn't matter. It's fantastic stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars The original and the best! 29 Mar 2010
Format:DVD
Don't see the tiresome re-make, why settle when you can enjoy the real thing! This is classic 70s bollywood and Amitabh Bachchan at his best. A laugh-a-minute, great action sequences, witty dialogue and Helen doing her sultry thing. Classic Bolly and a must for anyone who likes to watch classic films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Bollysploitation Gold. 16 Aug 2009
Format:DVD
Another 70s laugh/thrill a minute high octane cheesefest that'll leave a stupid grin on your face long after the 2 3/4 hr running time is over. A trash extravaganza that is brimming with low budget invention and convention in every glorious good-bad scene.

It's a daft organised crime thriller starring lanky legend Amitabh Bachchan as a smooth talking, betal leaf chewing, back flipping, murdering, street dancing gangster with a heart of gold. And co starring Zeenat Aman as a high kicking, gun toting, karate chopping, brotherless babe hungry for vengeance pie.
So, what do you get for your money? Well, just about everything except an Aman nude scene - but we do get her in a sizzling nurses outfit.
Some of the many highlights include:-
Frightful tight crotched flare flapping outfits and helmet hair-doos. Only the women escape with their dignity intact...just (Aman's culottes).
An insane low budget width defying car chase.
Rather good martial arts-ish fight scenes.
Randomly inserted english dialogue.
The mighty Helen shaking the booty in a white two-piece and blue contacts.
A black kid gurning to a James Brown track from the blacksploitation classic Black Caesar.
A full set of 70s underworld henchmen (and moll), exploding briefcases, a handy length of rope. A brown wigged Pran (actor) packin' a mean walking stick. And not forgeting the great song and dance.
Picture and sound quality are appropriately dodgy but the subs (songs included) are excellent.
