5.0 out of 5 stars Another gem from Giovanni Guareschi 28 Sep 2003
Format:Paperback
This is another wonderful collection of tales from Italy about the parish priest, Don Camillo, and his adversary Peppone, the communist mayor. Although set in the 1950s the humour is timeless, however the relationships which are at the heart of the stories are less familiar in our busy 21st century western societies. Perhaps that is what gives this book its charm - a longing for times when life was slower and simpler and people could speak their mind, fight and make up, watched over by the Crucified Christ on the cross above the church altar, who is also not averse to speaking his mind from time to time!

I discovered Don Camillo as a 12 year old, on promotion to the adult library.

I knew nothing of the politics/ historical background, but learned as I read.

The disputes detween the catholic priest and communist mayor are amusing, fascinating and taught me so much about how people with differing beliefs can be real comrades at heart.

Cammillos daily conversations with Christ, who so often takes the Communust mayors side, are wonderful.

If you have not read these books, order them all now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bought on a whim 8 Sep 2013

I had read some Don Camillo stories years ago and got this to recapture the pleasure. It has not let me down the stories are little tongue in cheek vinyettes of life in a small Italian village after the Second World War when the local priest and mayor vie for the upper hand in a love/hate relationship.
