Product Description

Spec-Ops soldier, First Sergeant Ellis Kirby leads a JSOC unit into the Tora Ghar cave system in Afghanistan in search of WMDs, but finds something much worse. Infected by an ancient power summoned by an evil cleric Kirby and his companions are whisked back to secret military laboratories in the US. The plague of creatures - known as rakes - that is subsequently unleashed threatens to wipe out the entire population of the United States and perhaps the world.
Kirby wakens in his room to discover that everyone in the lab has been slaughtered, and the monstrous flesh-eating creatures are loose and rampaging throughout the land, killing and propagating their species with abandon.
Through a country rapidly overwhelmed by the ravenous creatures, Kirby aims to return home to his parents’ farm in Iowa, but on his return – following a perilous cross country journey through rake-infested lands - he discovers that they are dead, so chooses instead to take the fight back to the monsters and their master.
Across the same devastated landscape travel Bree and Jill Adams, sisters at odds, who must face their past to survive the future, and three misfits collectively known as the Ruby gang. Each must endure their travails before all of them are thrown together, and then with Kirby, in a race to the eastern seaboard where the final conflict between man and beast is destined to play out in a battle encompassing modern warfare and ancient magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars gripping 22 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Not my usual genre but having read all the Joe Hunter books, and thoroughly enjoying them, I decided to give this book a try on my new Kindle. I am so glad I did . I was hooked from the start. I just didn't know what was gonna happen next. Lots of characters to empathise with. Totally recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Right Riveting Read! 11 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
First of all, apologies for the cliched title to this review. But it's true! As others have noticed, this type of thing isn't what Mr. Hilton usually serves up. Perhaps writing these sort of books is his guilty pleasure. Well that's okay because he certainly shares that.

I'm not really that into science fiction or horror novels. The last books I read in those genres would be perhaps some John Wyndham, Isaac Asimov or some early Stephen King. Most of those some decades ago. So, like others, what drew me here was the author.

The story is well written and taut. There's not much in there that doesn't move the plot along. The characters are well drawn and you see them develop along the way as the story progresses, both in themselves and their relationships. The "Rakes", the beasts who just want to eat and procreate even develop to a degree. Only eat and procreate? I think I know a few of these. However, I digress. The result is a book that carries you along, wanting to know what is going to happen. You really don't know what that will be either. Matt isn't averse to killing off major characters in spectacularly bloody style, so you get the feeling nobody is safe and neither a good or bad ending can be predicted to this story.

I just have to comment on Matt's descriptive qualities: Yuck! The descriptions of the Rakes devouring their victims are truly graphic. This is symptomatic of the desciptive qualities in the book though. There are passages of high tension, joyful reunions, touching moments and even car chases (car/Rake chases to be precise) that are all spot on.

So, in short, if you like the Joe Hunter novels, or indeed if you like books that entertain you, keep your interest throughout and, to use another cliche, are page-turners, then you're at the right place. Matt Hunter demonstrates that whatever genre of book, the qualities that make a good story are the same. Read this and you won't be disappointed. Indeed, like me, you'll be as hungry as a Rake for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Monster Hilton Creation. 29 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you love Matt's outher work, you realy have to check out this book, with Dominion he gives Stephen King a run for his money. From the outset you are pulled into a world as Barry McGuire sang, on 'the eve of destruction' giving a new twist to a biological threat and mixing it with a twist on the Alladin tales giving us an entity so terrifying you will not sleep at night. This is not panto land boys and girls but a land where you will lose everything including your soul if these nightmarish creatures get hold of you. Highly recommended if horror is your bag, if I could give it more than 5 stars I would have.
