Another great guidebook from Eyewitness Top 10. Like all their books, it is pocket sized and robust, with a strong waterproof cover and good quality paper pages. It is in full colour throughout and has lots of pictures. The 'top 10' format makes it easy to identify which activities to do when you have limited time and is ideal for holiday makers with one or two weeks only in the country. It's the perfect supplement if you are staying in a resort but want to get out and see some of the country too, but could also be useful for independent travellers as a carry-about book (you'd need internet research to supplement it).

The front and back covers both fold out to show lovely, clear maps. The front cover is a map of the whole country, the back cover is street maps of the capital city (Santo Domingo) and the biggest tourist city, Puerto Plata. There are maps throughout the guide and everything featured includes a map reference and is clearly marked on. The book starts with the top 10 of each of the top 10 sites, then a broader selection of top 10s (e.g. top 10 beaches), followed by sections for each of the six main areas of the island, with their own top 10s. The whole island is well covered.

The final section of the book has more general advice such as planning your trip, transport, security and safety. The 'top 10' format is still used although it is less relevant here. It covers all the basics that you need to know. There's a basic phrasebook at the very end too, after the index. One of the best features is a one-page 'pull out guide' - basically a strong, waterproof card map with essential information, folded into a plastic pouch in the back cover. This tiny guide can be taken out if you want to travel light and leave the book (although the book is small).

Useful but limited 26 Jan. 2009
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

We used this book only to help us decide where to go in the DR. However, when we went there in Jan 2009, we did not take the book. Descriptions were too superficial and it was not helpful for someone who was driving. A book such as The Rough Guide to the Dominican Republic as well as a large map are what you need once you are in the DR.

BTW, I also orderded Frommer's but Frommer's has few pictures and a lot of text, making it less user friendly.

Very beautiful, lots of good pictures.

On the negative side, a little bit hard to read, a just too little of information and not enough maps.

In general, very good book.

Eyewitness travel guides have lovely illustrations although the "Top 10" ones may be too concise for some. Would recommend to all and is easy to read
