5.0 out of 5 stars Philosophy of NLHE, 15 Nov 2011
This review is from: Dominate No-limit Hold'em: A Guide to the Math and Psychology of NLHE (D&B Poker Series) (Paperback)
The consensus on the author's earlier book was strong: although the book contained some good strategy, it was unnesserily hard-going for the reader due to poor editing and a slightly disjointed writing style. The author clearly took these comments on-board, and I can say this book suffers from none of the same issues. Each chapter begins with a quote from a famous philosopher, while each concept is illustrated with hands in a fictional poker game where the author plays against a cast of recurring characters who each play in a certain way. e.g. there's "Hil Vey, the famous black Israeli poker player", "the Sober Greek", and a few fish called "China", "Big Bear" and "Baby Bear".

Content-wise the book covers a lot of good material in an accessible way: EV calculations, combinatorics, calculating hand ranges and there's a lot of emphasis on adapting to opponents' mistakes. Another topic that was well-explained is the logic behind polarised three-betting ranges.

There's then a quiz at the end of each section using these characters. It's a bit more fun than your usual poker quiz as he uses pithy answers like: "Image is a much more important factor versus the Greek than a bear. The bears are not sophisticated enough to pay attention to these ideas. They are just bears".

The book is rounded off with hand-by-hand analysis of a few heads-up and 6-max sessions, where you get to see the author make mistakes and adapt to his opponents. It's the kind of material which poker videos were made for, but the sessions help to round the book out to a decent size.

As with his first book the strategy is very good, but the presentation in this one puts it in a whole different league.

4.0 out of 5 stars of course it's a good book but...., 15 Sep 2011

This review is from: Dominate No-limit Hold'em: A Guide to the Math and Psychology of NLHE (D&B Poker Series) (Paperback)
I like Danny Ashman, I admired very much the first book, but I'm somewhat disappointed by this one :

1-I don't understand why a lot of hand exemples in this book are the same as in the previous book (copy/paste). Danny Ashman obviously played millions of hands, so why not choosing new exemples, so people can work on new material ? Even if they are good hands, it's annoying to pay twice for the exact same situation analysis. Is it lazyness ? No it's not, because there is a lot of work in this book, and thus it brings me back to my interrogation : why not 100% new hands ?

2-Chapter handreading : it's composed of hand analysis only : these analysis are very interesting as usual with the author, but I wish they were at least grouped by themes (like in the previous book), which would allow the student I am to have a more complete view of a certain part of the game, and more easily see what really differenciate a situation from another.

3-When the author talks about the opponent in a hand, I often wish he would be a little more precise : for exemple, "opponent is bad" is not enough for me : is he bad because he calls too much ? or because he's too weak ? too aggressive ? too passive ? or because he just read hand based on the current street ? Being a bit more precise (even just a little bit) would allow us to work on the hand more efficiently, and also to see what details matters to a professional. He refers frequently to the fact that bad players make more mistakes... Sure, but that's too bad he keeps the rest for himself : such a great player know precisely what kind of mistakes THIS bad player can do and plays accordingly, and so does NOT the reader.

I'm not a professional, I'm just an amateur (so probably there are implicit things to see - or to read between the lines - that I'm not able to see), but I take my game seriously, I work a lot, I invest time and money to learn, and I would have welcomed a bit more detailed steps to help me.

Why 4 stars then ? 3 reasons :

- After reading "secrets of..." (I was literally "shocked" by its quality), I expected so much from this one that I was probably meant to be disappointed, and of course it doesn't mean that it's a bad book.

- I only talked about what I personally considered as leaks in this book, which is completely unfair, this book is (also) full of great reasonnings and a goldmine if you want to improve. The right approach is (for me) to consider it as a workbook, rather than a strategy book (be prepared to work, to think, to recall you own hands, etc... rather than memorize anything).

- Despite all the things that (I think) could've been done better, this book contains great value information, so much more than 95% of other poker books. Buying a very bad book of Danny Ashman will always teach you much more than buying the best book from... well... say... lots and lots and lots of people who probably realized that writing books was their only chance to make any money out of poker.

I never had any coach or mentor, and books taught me pretty much everything I know, so I've bought and studied tons of it. After reading Danny Ashman's books, I realize the amount of time and money wasted before on poor material, and it makes me so sad and so angry in the same time that I already feel the Tilt running through my veins.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dominate No-Limit Hold'em: A Guide to the Math and Pyschology of Poker (D&B Poker Series), 22 Sep 2011

This review is from: Dominate No-limit Hold'em: A Guide to the Math and Psychology of NLHE (D&B Poker Series) (Paperback)
There are plenty of hand examples and different subjects are covered, but I was a little underwhelmed by the book and the advice within. I'm hesitant to divulge much more detail as the author is a winning player, and it is just my interpretation, but I was expecting more and my belief is that this book only covered the surface area of an extremely complex pursuit. It might just be that the title is misleading in terms of the book seems to be geared more for beginners.
