Whip Your Knitting into Shape

do•mi•kni•trix \ da-mi-'ni-triks \ n, pl -trices [US, var. of dominatrix, re: knitting] (2005): a woman who dominates her knitting; broadly: a badass knitter

You have knitted your last bad piece. Let the DomiKNITrix show you the ropes. Yes, it may be painful to take the time to knit a gauge swatch, count stitches and fix mistakes. But just think of the pleasure you'll get when you knit a gorgeous, perfect sweater with no holes and no uneven stitches.

Learn the rules or else. Inside you'll find a no-nonsense, comprehensive guide to essential knitting operations and finishing techniques, including step-by-step instructions for all the basic stitches used in the patterns in the book.

Get your hands dirty. The book features over 20 spicy projects to satisfy any knitting appetite. For a Knitting Quickie, choose from one of the smaller projects, such as the Mohawk hat or the popular Snow Devil cap. If you want more of a challenge, try the L'il Red Riding Hoodie or the Big Bad Wolf icon sweater, The Slink or City Coat.

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT for the experienced knitter! 15 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Although there are some good patterns in this book, there aren't that many - over half the book is taken up with 'how to knit', which is frustrating for the experienced knitter. The patterns too cheat a little - there are three jumpers that are actually the same but with three different charts to insert. If you're a beginner, you will love it. Otherwise, unless you need a 'how to knit' handbook, there are better alternative knitwear pattern books on the market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost for words... 22 Feb 2007
Format:Paperback
Such a great book! Attention to detail, fantastic shaping techniques...I was a little worried that the two big projects were not included in the book (Gothlet end Elfin Bride) but Jen will e-mail the patterns to the book purchasers now that they are fully finished...just need to register on her website! Finished 2 hats already and can't wait to start on my next project. Perfect handbag size, funky designs and good (refresher) course on some techniques...absolutely LOVE it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab, Fab, Fab! 2 Jan 2007
Format:Paperback
Just got my copy today, and have fallen in love with it. It leans towards a Goth theme, but with over 20 patterns, there seems to be something in this book for everyone. From hats to coats, jumpers to jewellery, the patterns are rated from easy to difficult, with plenty of guidance and photos to help you along. It covers adding zippers and teaches you how to correct your mistakes.

I should have bought two copies, as I think I may wear this one out from use.

Whilst the traditional knitter may find the presentational style of this book a little "surprising", if you take the time to read it you will find that this is actually a top quality book about producing really beautiful and PROPERLEY FITTED knitwear. The range of patterns included is wide, and the author has explained each and every technique used so even the novice knitter will be able to "whip up" something to be proud of. All in all great fun, clear instructions, and a great change from saggy baggy sweaters! Plus the PVC-esque cover is very practical if you spill your cuppa on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book 4 Feb 2007
Format:Paperback
I have been so loking forward to this book arriving and when I finally got my mits on it I was not disapointed. This is a great book with plenty of patterns that I want to try out. Ive only been knitting for a (very) short time but the instructions have given me the confidence to try out some more elabroate items. I love the style of the book too, really blows a big rasberry to all the older stuffy books that your mum had hanging arround. The designs are very young and funky though so if that s not your cup of tea perhaps you wont like it as much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for a beginner with a sense of humor! 14 Feb 2007
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am not a beginner knitter but I would recommend this book for beginners and experienced alike. It is such fun! Very modern approach to teaching how to knit with very useful hints and tips. I have lots of colourful books and magazines on the subject but none had made me go back to my needles so fast and with so much gusto! And this is my comment on the first 40 pages alone! I am looking forward to devouring the rest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad 11 Aug 2007
Format:Paperback
I was very excited to read about this book and ordered it as soon as possible. It does have some really great designs and a few naff / quirky ones (depending on your view). I absolutey fell in love with four of the patterns and started planning for them. However, the best design (Elfin Bride/Gothlet)is not actually in the book it was publishd later on the net (password accessible only); two other designs require so much yarn that the cost is almost prohibitive; the last one on my list is still possible if I can find a substitute for the recommended yarn, which is not available in the UK.

All in all this has the same problem that a lot of US knitting books have, which is that the recommended yarns are not easily available over here and they are mostly Aran weight or heavier (in this book - it seems to be mostly chunky weight) - not very flattering to any but the most svelte.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great patterns! 21 May 2007
By Wayne Redhart TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
My wife had a great time with this book. Most of the patterns were extremely enjoyable to both of us. My only complaint is with the knitted handcuffs. If sadomasochism is your game then there is no substitute for heavy-duty titanium. While Doreen's mango chutney goes beyond anything Sharwoods have to offer, there are some places where home-made just doesn't cut it.
