I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's well written and keenly observed. Trollope has a sense of humor and is very good at recording conversation. The physical descriptions bring to life the landscape and life of the early 19th century.
Much time has passed since her visit, but anyone who thinks for a minute will still recognize some typically American traits. The very fact that people still get their backs up about criticisms from 180 years ago confirms one of her biggest criticisms. I'm glad the tobacco spitting is no more, and that women are no longer segregated from men in social situations. I have a feeling the gender segregation was mostly confined to what was then the western frontier in Ohio, where Trollope spent most of her time.
