Facey Romford's Hounds is one of the great English comic novels, thoroughly enjoyable even for those (like me) who know nothing about and have no enthusiam for fox-hunting (you'll enjoy it more though if you read Surtees's Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour first, which introduces several of the main characters -- and is an even greater comic novel -- Surtees is Britain's most underrated novelist). Ignore the one-star review here, which is of a different book altogether (Ma Trollope's travelogue of USA)...

Format:Paperback
this really is a dryly hilarious book, which is really a travelogue of Mrs Trollope's journeys around various parts of the USA and her subsequent observations of the habits and lifestyles of those she met, a bit like a Victorian version of Bill Bryson! I understand the book was banned in the US when first published as it is so derogatory! I can well imagine the English Victorians sitting in their parlours giggling smugly at her pithy descriptions of the 'uncouth' pioneers of the era.

If you are willing to stick with the old fashioned language, then this does give a fascinating insight into the way of life of the early Americans settling this vast new country.

font too small 12 Dec 2010
By Nancy Schulte - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the observations and occasional humor, but advise against buying this edition. The font is so small that I kept putting it down after a couple of pages -- and my eyesight is fine. I subsequently ordered a (free) Kindle edition whose font I could adjust, and read the book that way. I would give the book 3 or 4 stars -- just not this painful edition.

Poor presentation 22 Jan 2010
By K. Matthews - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Disappointed to find the print too small & pale on the pages, as if they skimped on ink! Hard to read. Got it as a gift for my elderly mother, but won't give it to her; can barely read it myself.

Fox-hunting highjinks 16 May 2006
By Bomojaz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Robert Smith Surtees devoted his life basically to two things: fox hunting and novel writing, actually combining both into a single pursuit. He wrote a number of delightful novels centering around the fox-hunting society in and about Durham, England; this was his last book, published posthumously, and among his best. Facey Romford is a confidence trickster who passes himself off as his wealthy namesake, using the other's stationery to pull off the switch. He becomes Master of the Hounds of the Heavyside Hunt, and from that vantage point we are privy to all kinds of characters and happenings. The novel ends with Facey and his new bride going to Australia, not in disgrace, as was hoped by all who knew him, but where his fortunes only increase and all is well. Surtees's humor is broad and ruthless, and his observations on what makes this society tick are keen and perceptive. The novel presents an entertaining look at the sporting side of Victorian England.
