Review

." . . a useful starting place. Unfamiliar words are collected in a glossary, and notes to each chapter provide references to some of the more specialist works. An index of sites serves as a guide to finding discussion of them in the text and to their location on four maps. The text is amplified by black and white plates and a generous number of line drawings, the latter generally placed conveniently close to the discussion. A guide to further reading is also included . . ." -The Classical Review, Vol. XLVIII, No. 1, 1998

Product Description

Intended as a companion to "Roman Public Buildings"(0-85989-239-5) by the same editor, this volume completes the architectural picture of Roman society. The text covers the political, social and economic significance of residential buildings, includes a chapter on gardens and refers to the Hadrianic "palace" discovered at Vindolanda in 1992.

good introductory survey 18 May 2004
By F. Tronchin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a good intro. survey of Roman houses, palaces, military housing, and urban planning for college students and armchair historians. It is scholarly, with footnotes and bibliography, but more advanced scholars might be disappointed with the level of scholarship. While written by various British scholars, there is a distinct emphasis on archaeological remains in Roman Italy, but many other examples in other parts of the empire are also given.
