Product Description

Review

A 'sticky book'. I couldn't put it down. -- Cruising Magazine, Summer 2008

Dolphins would appeal to both experienced boaters and those who have never been on the water. It is free of complicated or technical terminology and is a most charming read. -- The Lifeboat Magazine, Summer 2008

I can't emphasize enough how well Clayton writes -- her prose is so vivid that the reader is left with indelible images. -- Living Aboard Magazine, September 2008

The author's descriptions of the beauty that surrounds them are breathtaking. It is a wonderful story, full of adventure. -- The Tome Traveler, September 2008

I think that "Dolphins Under My Bed" would be great for any age readers.
-- The Midwest Book Review, Spring 2008

More About the Author

As a free-lance writer my output ranged from general magazine articles to educational puppet plays for children and an award-winning radio play for the BBC. Part of my day job was to make specialist information accessible to the general public. Inevitably, when I went sailing, I wrote to make those experiences which I found so compelling accessible to as wide an audience as possible.

So one of my great pleasures now is hearing from readers who say how completely they have slipped into Voyager's world. One said she was reading Dolphins Under My Bed on her long winter 'bus rides to and from work but had ceased to notice them as in her mind she was sailing down summer coastlines. Also, she said, on the journeys home she was now always on the lookout for the planet Venus - a particular favourite with sailors - in the evening sky.

One of the things that a book does is take us into a world that we would not otherwise enter, and perhaps would not particularly wish to on a physical level. Through the mind's eye, however, a book takes us to magical places without the financial cost or the bodily discomforts of physically getting there. It also offers another person's perspective, the world through someone else's eyes.

Perhaps one of the most complimentary things anyone has said to me was a half-embarrassed, "To be honest, this isn't the sort of book I would normally take off the shelf. But once I started it, I couldn't stop." Although an acquaintance said, 'Now I've read your books, I think I understand you.' I'm still mulling that one over.

Through sailing, which I had no taste for initially, I developed a love of the sea. In loving it, I became aware of its fragility. If my books were to achieve anything among readers, apart from an enjoyment of places and people and open spaces, I should want them to see the oceans of the world as the truly extraordinary environments they really are, instead of just a food source and a dumping ground for the world's garbage.

There is no more captivating sight than a family of common dolphins teaching their babies to swim with your boat, or a pod of 80-foot fin whales observing you minutely as they overtake you at four-times your speed. They do not endanger us. But, sadly, we are damaging them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dolphins Under My Bed 26 Jun 2008
By Tami Brady TOP 500 REVIEWER
Retiring on the sea. No mortgage payments. Waking up each morning to the sounds of the water. The chaos of the city and the rat race left far behind. The freedom.

It sounds absolutely fabulous. The idea of selling the house, retiring, and living on a boat is a common fantasy. Dolphins Under My Bed is the travelogue of a couple who decided to live their dream, well the author's husband's dream. The author herself was quite wary about the entire concept. Her limited experiences with boats and sailing had not done anything to feed her enthusiasm. I think she only agreed to the possibility of retiring on the water because she hoped that somewhere along the line her husband would change his mind.

I highly suggest this book for anyone dreaming about retiring and living on the water. Dolphins Under My Bed is an honest work showing both the good and the bad about this kind of life. There were a lot of things I think that this couple were ill prepared for and a resource like this could have been a big help.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok - just 17 Oct 2013

I should have read the other reviews before buying this! On the positive side, the book is easy to read and does give some insight into cruising. Just like others, however, I found the negativity irritating. To be fair, the book is dated and a lot has changed in the last 20 years since this journey was undertaken, but.....my advice to the author would be, if you don't like other people, don't write about them! It also worries me that this gives sailing a bad press. We sail off the French coast and although there is the odd time when we meet the difficulties described, mainly it is a real pleasure and we meet lovely people. Please don't let this put you off!

I couldn't put it down. I was there with them on every wave.
It made me want to follow in their footsteps but with a hubbie who doesn't like to out of his depth, there's no way we will ever do it.
Thank you for the enjoyment - I've already started the next instalment and look forward to future adventures.

4.0 out of 5 stars a lovely book 22 Feb 2014

Such a nice, easy to read, simple story of everyday sailing folk. My husband loves sailing. I don't. He would have loved to do something like that. They obviously enjoyed the whole experience - even the scary bits in the Med. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in sail cruising.

2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish it 15 Nov 2013

This seemed to promise so much but is basically a personal diary of what they have for tea each night and the view af approaching yet another bay and not being able to speak the language.
Even the dolhpin bit is disappointing as she states no-one else believed her.
Got bored, didn't finish it.
