Book Description

4 July 2011
Dolphin culture evolved over millions of years so they could remain perfectly attuned with their world, Ocean. Unlike man, they have created an almost utopian society without feeling the need to manipulate their environment, collect possessions or wage war. But the growing pressure of man's activities become intolerable and in frustration one faction seeks an aggressive new path, making a shocking departure from The Way - the ancient philosophy that has guided them so well through the millennia. Sky, a male dolphin close to becoming an Initiate in The Way, unwillingly finds himself caught up in the violent consequences. To save the lives of his closest friends he will have to risk the worst punishment his clan can inflict and must decide between the two females who challenge everything he believes in.

Product Description

Review

"Masterfully weaves a believable tale of dolphin life - you will never look at a dolphin the same way again!" Mark Evans, Sport Diver Magazine "A superbly plotted, accomplished and entertaining novel with a powerful environmental message describing the intolerable pressure from man's destruction of the dolphins' world" Nicola Hodgins, Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society

About the Author

Mark Caney has spent much of his life on or in the sea, sailing and diving. English by birth, he lived abroad for eighteen years and during that time travelled to many countries working on diving related projects. These varied from photo shoots of sharks, running private courses for Arab sheikhs, leading an award-winning, four month expedition to east Africa, and operating a dive school in Cyprus. Since 1996, he has held the position of vice president with the well known diver training agency, PADI and is based in their offices in Bristol, UK. During his life he has had many encounters with dolphins and has had frequent opportunities to study them in detail. He is a marine mammal medic and is an active member of the board of the marine environmental charity, Project AWARE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Initially cynical, then fell in love! 7 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
I have to admit, I wasn't planning on reading this book. As a freediver and scuba diver, I have come across far too many guys who think they are "half man half dolphin", girls who believe in "dolphin therapy" and general hippies who say "we have a lot to learn about our behaviour" from them (maybe we do, but we don't need the dolphins to tell it to us - we know it already, the truth is just inconvenient!). So, I was cynical - but when a copy arrived in the post, it seemed churlish not to at least give it a chance.
Make yourself do that. The first few chapters are hard work. Getting used to the beautiful but complex dolphin names reminded me of reading Russian novels ("Touches the Sky", "Fades into Dusk" and my favourite "Muddy River Mouth"). Reading life from a dolphin's point of view and learning the language is also a bit of a challenge (maybe it needs a key, but then working it out is also fun - "Walker"= human, "Cleaner" = shark - and the names are all intelligent). But... once you get into it, it really gets going, a bit like War and Peace really.
Serious messages about the environment are just part of the furniture - you never feel like the book is preaching to you. As a fisherman's daughter, I loved the thought of dolphins sticking to feeding quotas! Favourite quote: "We can't just float about like plankton, hoping the other species will see reason."
Humour, mostly revolving around Muddy, is mixed easily in alongside drama, much as it is in real life. The action does occasionally get violent, which at first made me think this might mean the book, which otherwise might be a great teenage read, might not suit children - but then I remembered Harry Potter's battles!
From a freediving point of view, the physiology and technical stuff is very sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dolphin Way 15 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I was transported to another world whilst reading Dolphin Way. Mark Caney so vividly and imaginatively describes the world of dolphins that I found myself eagerly turning each page to find out what would happen next.

As the story unfolded I felt more and more that we as humans have so much to learn and need to look outside our own small world if we are to stand any chance of a better future for generations to come.

I can't wait to read the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you for Dolphin Way! 25 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
It is wonderful when you find a book that is so magical it transports you away from your everyday routines. I've just finished reading Mark Caney's Dolphin Way and now feel at a loss as I've had to say goodbye to the world it took me to. Between the covers of this book I have lived among the dolphins. I have grown to love some wonderful characters, I have laughed, shed tears and followed their adventures with bated breath. I have listened to their fears for their home and for our planet and marvelled at their understanding of deep philosophies. As I close this exquisite book I am left with a deeper understanding of our world. If you want to read something very special then I highly recommend you read this beautiful dolphin story. I can't wait to join this world again in Mark's next novel. Thank you Mark for giving us Dolphin Way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transported to another world! 22 July 2011
Format:Paperback
A wonderful book for all ages. Never before has the underwater world been brought to life in such an exciting and imaginative way. We follow the exploits and adventures of Sky and his fellow dolphins in an underwater version of Watership Down. While the kids will love the antics and scrapes the beautifully drawn characters get into, the older readers will see a fascinating and intelligent look at the state of our planet and what Man is doing to the oceans. The author has drawn upon his extensive diving experience to truly transport the reader to another world, but one that is so close to home, and can be experienced by anyone who so wishes, but also one that bit by bit we are slowly destroying.
One of those rare books that transcends age and gender and will surely be lapped up by Hollywood in the not too distant future.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read! 12 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Dolphin Way is a beautifully written novel which truly inspires the imagination. Mark Caney has created a stunning new world which I am sure will captivate readers of all ages. Told from the point of view of one of nature's most complex and intelligent creatures, Dolphin Way masterfully weaves a tale which will not only change the way we view dolphins, but human beings as well. This novel was such a page-turner, I couldn't put it down once I had started it and I am now eagerly waiting for news on when the next book in the series will be available. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking story 22 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Dolphin Way is first and foremost a cracking story. In setting that story in the wonderful world of dolphins Caney adds a superb extra dimension and important glimpse of a world it is all too easy for us to forget.
Full of humour, at times fantastic, always uncompromising and occasionally brutal this is an exciting read that left me breathless, excited and looking forward to the second instalment.
