Book Description

21 April 1994 Drama Classics
Number three in NHB's Drama Classics Series, providing the world's great drama at a great price.

The introduction to this edition of A Doll's House includes a short biography of Henrik Ibsen and chronology of his work; a guide to what happens in the play; a short history of the play and its context; and a brief guide to characterisation, language and themes.

Nora Helmer, wife to Torvald and mother of three children, appears to enjoy living the life of a pampered, indulged child. But as her economic dependence becomes brutally clear, Nora's acceptance of the status quo undergoes a profound change. To the horror of the bewildered Torvald, himself caught in the tight web of a conservative society which demands that he exert strict control, Nora comes to see that the only possible true course of action is to leave the family home.

A Doll's House is a set text for Edexcel (London) English Language and Literature A/AS Level and for NICCEA English Literature A/As Level.

Review

Ibsen's work has always relied on its translators...Best of all - in my opinion at least - is Kenneth McLeish's outstanding translation of the play. --Stephen Unwin Artistic director ETT and the Rose Theatre, Kingston

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheap Copy but falls apart easily. 1 Jan 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this for an assignment for a Drama class I was taking, we had to buy this version specifically to take the exam with. The book pages starting falling out of the book after not very long, not just in my copy, but with at least half the classes books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for study use 10 Feb 2012
By MitchB
Format:Paperback
This book was used to study Isben's work at A-level standard. I found it useful but did find it somewhat difficult as this version of the text seems to have been modernised from the original.
