This is a, smart, distinctive debut novel. Various exotic locales - Paris, Italy, Brazil - serve as the background for the ruminations of Una, a sixteen year old girl who has difficulty drawing a line between fantasy and reality. For the most part light and airy, the book nevertheless has as its core the genuine seriousness one expects of good fiction, and in one key sequence the tone palpably darkens. A fast, one-sitting read written in smooth prose which resonates in the mind long after the last page is turned. Recommended.
