I can agree with the other reviewer here - A GREAT album from 1996 (what a year for this kind of music with classics from Therion & Emperor!)
It's atmospheric, moody, dark and haunting - more than just Black Metal!
Keyboards dominate over guitar, the vocals bleed with feeling while still sounding harsh and those drums! Programmed drums are perfect for this - they wouldn't work for Dimmu Borgir or for that matter, on Metallica's S&M BUT because this music is reasonably slow paced and VERY march like, they work perfectly (If you've seen the Drummer Trolls in the LOTR movies, you'll know exactly what I mean!)
This stuff will put you in a trance at times! The Tolkien themes & lyrics are perfect for this music and as long as you're broadminded it could appeal to fans of Epica/Nightwish just as much as Burzum/Satyricon. Just remember, harsh vocals from BOTH members, programmed 'martial/battle' style drums and LOTS of symphonic keyboards, lower mixed guitars and a very dark feel - a million miles from NEW Nightwish or Within Temptation though!
The production is decent - It's not their best album, thats a tie for me between Oath Bound (2006) and Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame (2001), but it is their best selling.
A scan of my recent reviews/purchases will reveal just how much this band (made up of only 2 members) has impressed me! They aren't very well known which is a damned shame. And I will do my best to champion them!
