Product Description

DOGS is a short story anthology. Despite its title, the 'alpha males' featured are all Homo Sapiens - men with violent tendencies and pack mentalities, who often display misogynist, racist or homophobic attitudes. For all that this fiction explores life's often darker extremes, with themes including war crimes, domestic abuse, street violence and drug problems, there is always a sense of hope and the inevitable triumph of the human spirit.

The stories are set in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Musselburgh.

"An eclectic expose of the dark underbelly of Scottish culture and modern living. In short, another top read from the ever consistent pen of Mark Fleming, a real talent on the fringe of Edinburgh". (Bobby Smith, Author of 'One Love, Two Colours').

Fleming's previous publications include BRAINBOMB, a novel and BEDLAM, another short story compilation, both published by Chipmunka Publishing. These titles are also available on Amazon.

BRAINBOMB

"Great stuff, but it moves like a rocket and it's totally mashed my head!" (Irvine Welsh, Author of Trainspotting, Acid House, Filth and numerous other contemporary literary gems).

"A bang bang bang mish mash of reference points and incident which steams along at a million miles an hour". (Stuart Blackwood, Writer and Reviewer).

"Fans of Edinburgh's 80s and 90s counterculture movement that came out of Rebel Inc magazine will love his work". (Peter Ross, Portobello Reporter).

BEDLAM

"Creativity at its best and a bucketful of humour". (Honey Bane, Lyricist, Poet and Performer).

5.0 out of 5 stars Another engrossing anthology from Mark Fleming 25 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Mark Fleming's latest short story collection, Dogs, depicts a dark and fearsome world where bad things happen. Events transform each central character's everyday existence into the stuff of nightmares. Despite the sinister elements lurking in each story, it can be extremely funny. Fleming's creativity paints such a vivid picture that many of these tales could be turned into great dramas for the small or large screen. In particular, Werewolves, which sees a loving husband and father, desperate to protect his family, turn into a deranged vigilante (this is both disturbing and hilarious).

4.0 out of 5 stars This Dog roars. 10 July 2012
By Bobby Smith TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
I am not normally one for short stories but I picked this collection up after reading and enjoying the author's previous work.
In many ways this is a natural progression from the earlier Brain Bomb, as the subject matter, 14 short stories of drunken and scarred Scots, is the gift that keeps on giving. Each one of these bursts of human nature drags the reader into a world of drink, drugs, voices from the past and of the choices we all make as adults.
The stories cover all sorts of emotions and experiences, ranging from child abuse, casual sex, wartime atrocities and the perils of living in a Scotland where everyone - or so it seems - is off their heads on either drink or drugs.
One point I should make is that the dialogue between the characters throughout contains the whiff of authenticity - I really could imagine the faces speaking and spitting the words out as they vent their spleen on each other and the reader.
Not without humour, this is an eclectic expose of the dark underbelly of Scottish culture and modern living.
In short, another top read from the ever consistent pen of Mark Fleming, a real talent on the fringe of Edinburgh.
