Product Description

Product Description

Desmond Morris presents here the ultimate reference book on domestic dog breeds. For over 180 officially recognised pedigree breeds he proves a detailed history, and a full description of its qualities and characteristics, together with beautiful photographs of typical examples of the breed. Many breeds have obscure origins, bur Dr Morris has researched these with meticulous care and presents a fascinating account of the conflicting theories. As a leading expert on animal behaviour he also explores why dogs, and particular breeds, behave as they do. For each breed a list of colour forms is provided, together with the names and addresses of its breed club. No one who owns, or hopes to own, a pedigree dog - and certainly no one professionally involved in the world of dog - can afford to be without this magnificently produced and illustrated handbook. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

If you are looking for fancy pictures this is not the book for you, this is meant to be a reference dictionary. For each breed you can find an account of its origins and the description of its main physical characteristics and temperament. For most of the breed a black and white not very good drawing is present and for some of them even a reference bibliography. It is possible to find not only the breeds recognised by the kennel clubs, but also many others. The book could be improved by a systematic addition of the average (or standard) size and weight of each breed.

This is indeed a reference book. If you are looking for nice pictures, it is not for you.

This book is thick and full of facts. Whenever you see or hear about a breed, it is guaranteed you can find it in this book. It has never failed for me, and I can tell you, that I am serious about some very rare and hard to find breeds, many of which even most professionals do not know of.

Interesting is that you can find data of already extinct breeds, such as edible dog breeds and others as well.

So, if you wonder what was the mumblegumble-breed that was mentioned somewhere, check it from this book.

I highly value Morris's work and he has once more completed a masterpiece.

I recommend this book to all of you who are interested on dogs. This is THE reference book to have on your bookshelf. Grab it whenever needed and check the breed you wish! This even will give you ideas on what dog breed would be best for you.

Plus, it is very objective!
