Product Description

Product Description

This is a 12,000 word novelette based on actual events.

It may not be homicide, but to DI Lorne Simpkins it’s still murder.

When a reporter friend of DI Lorne Simpkins gives her a tip about a story involving ex-racing greyhounds, Lorne is sceptical.
But after delving into it, she’s horrified to discover the grisly fate of racing dogs that are no longer useful to their owners – and she’s determined to bring the cruel and uncaring owners to justice…

“Animal welfare is so close to my heart, the real-life plight of these former racing dogs moved me to tears.
I’m delighted to donate all profits of the book to PUPS, The Protection of Unwanted Puppies Society.”

Mel Comley – Author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever way to spread the word... 26 Dec 2011
By Cheryl M-M TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The writer has found an incredibly clever way to make people aware of the plight of greyhounds or racing dogs after they are retired. By linking it to her widely read and popular Lorne Simpkins series, she has ensured that many more will spread the word about the awful fate of these innocent creatures. I give it four stars for the intended thought and purpose it was created for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. Just.. wow. 8 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book touched me in ways I can't describe with words and had me close to tears. To think what these greyhounds go through when their career is over is just dreadful.

Mel Comley writes in such a way that you can't help but be moved by this story. With Lorne and Pete, who we love and trust, right in the middle of what's going on, it's another superb Lorne Simpkins story.

Mel Comley should be praised for raising the profile of such a hard topic and donating to PUPS. It takes a truly remarkable person to have the courage to write about something so close to the hearts of many. I think she has done a fantastic job with this book and I encourage everyone to read it

5.0 out of 5 stars A thrilling, fast--paced read 4 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved the DI Lorne series by Mel Comley and this short story featuring her was a thrilling, fast-paced read. It's horrendous what these poor ex-greyhounds go through. Kudos to Mel Comley for raising awareness and donating the proceeds to PUPS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short story 5 Dec 2013

Mel Comley Short story
It's a dogs life
This is a short story with Lorne and her DS partner Pete investigating what happens to greyhounds when they retire. As is with all Mel's books it gets a hold of you from very early and sets a fair pace. This novella is not without Lorne's private life being brought into things and it's great following all the goings on. Well worth a read.
5 stars. 05 December 2013.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking read 22 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
D.I Lorne Simpkins and her partner, Pete, are reluctantly drawn into the unglamorous, seedy and dangerous side of the greyhound racing world as they follow up on a tip-off relating to animal cruelty. Lorne is determined to make a difference and save the greyhounds destined to be "dispatched" when no longer able to compete in the races. Not surprisingly she meets with resistance and danger as she attempts her rescue mission.
A well-written, thought-provoking book but I cannnot say I enjoyed it, given the nature of the subject matter. However, I must applaud the author for bringing the plight of these poor animals to a wider audience. It is a very sad indictment of our society that once these dogs have served their useful purpose by securing huge profits they can be so cruelly and callously discarded by unscrupulous owners! The retired greyhounds definitely deserve better and hopefully, with greater public awareness, this type of monstrous practice will be eradicated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Addressing animal cruelty 11 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mel Comleys books are never a disappointment. This short story is no exception, it's a nice, easy read for whenever you have a spare hour. A change from the usual fast paced Lorne and Pete adventures (not of the Enid Blyton sort), this story focusses upon the plight of grayhounds after their usefullness at racing has come to an end. You may have thought you were aware of some of the struggles these beautiful dogs go through, I certainly did, but after reading this book I was shocked. A must read.
