From the Midwestern family who place their thoroughbred at the centre of the formal family portrait, to the Vietnamese mongrel scrabbling around in the dirt, Erwitt's portraits show dogs in all their various moods. But the beauty of the collection is the real value Erwitt gives the dogs as subjects--they are not accessories to enhance cutesie pictures, nor companions for a human centrepiece; rather the focal point of his attention. Even scantily-clad joggers or sunbathers can't outshine their canine companions when seen through Erwitt's lens.
With more than 850 black-and-white pictures (captions are virtually non-existent), Dogdogs needs no introduction, and Erwitt leaves his eight pages of text until the centre of the book. Even his occasional feline imposters cannot detract from what is a dog-owner's dream. From the hardy Doberman pinscher scrabbling through the dustbin for food, to the pampered poodles of New York's dog shows, Erwitt never fails to entrance. The small, thick format of Dogdogs (which is only about seven by five inches in size) elevates it above a mere coffee-table distraction--this is an intelligent, insightful, and most of all passionate, celebration of everything canine. --Lucie Naylor

People and their dogs,
By
This review is from: DogDogs (Paperback)
"you look like your dog" should be the title of this book. It is wonderful, there are some classic "dog looks like owner" photographs. I am not really a dog lover, rather a photographer, and there are loads of stunning photos here. Lots to laugh out loud at. Some classics. As a photographer, I have learned to look at animals and people differently. My gran, 94, a dog show judge, and loved the book.So if you love dogs or photos, this is for you.

A Book to Treasure,
This review is from: DogDogs (Paperback)
I bought this book some years ago and I just know I will keep it forever. I am often reaching for my well thumbed copy just to browse through. It works as an uplifting tonic; a feast for the dog lovers eyes. The sensitive, intelligent, black and white photography could only be captured by someone who respects dogs. You see this in every image. Each picture allows us a glimpse into the narrative of a dog's secret life. Worth every penny - would make a perfect gift, just make sure you buy one for yourself too.

A book to visit time and time again,
By S. D. Williams "shilo115" (North Wales, GB) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: DogDogs (Paperback)
A friend bought this book for me when my first dog died suddenly. Her message was that she wanted me to smile the way I did when I talked about Bobbi... Smile I have done, and cried! I pick up this book again and again and always find something new to wonder over or make me smile. I bought this as a gift for a fellow dog loving friend. This is a book that will continue to bring me warmth and happiness for many of my years ahead.
