I really enjoyed this book, it inspired me to teach my dog who already brought me the post in the morning to do other little chores around the house. She is helpful, anddoes it her tail wagging so hard I know she loves it..

Your dog will be glad you have read this book, they truely cherish every job they are allocated. My last dog was wonderful and he did have a very good life, but through reading books like this, I have solved my problem of lack of inspiration, which means my current dog is even happier.

I am sorry if this review upsets the other people who have reviewed this title so positively, but I was really disappointed. I bought it expecting it would be about Hazel's life with Connie and was surprised to see that the end part (approximately a third of the total book) is a basic dog-training manual. This might be of interest to a novice dog owner but was completely irrelevant to me. I also found the writing style very disjointed and awkward and quite repetitive and boring in places. She jumps from describing her first meeting with her new puppy and the first few weeks of their life together to a section of hints on dog-training to a chapter on her childhood, then back to recent times, then more hints on dog-training etc. We also have a chapter giving brief biographies of other dogs she has owned.

The story could have been really interesting if it had been more well-written, and if the training hints had been all put in one section, but as it is, I skim-read the last half as I was so bored. I also feel it should be made clear on the cover how much of the book is on how to train your dog as the cover blurb gives the impression it is just Hazel's story of her life with Connie.

For anyone thinking of owning or already owns a Newfoundland this is the book for you.
Gives an excellant insight to the breed from puppyhood to adulthood. With excellant tips and advice on training any dog. Hazel Carter knows her stuff and I took more from this book than any other book I have read on the breed.
A book that really does show the full potential of this wonderful breed, something that I will come back to read time and time again.

What a lovely little book, such a simple story. Hazel remembers her childhood days growing up surrounded by animals especially dogs and her many dogs thru out her life. There are several chapters toward the back of the book on Dog Training Guide and handy hints for dog owners. This little book would be handy for anyone thinking of getting a new puppy. I hope my review has been of some help. So happy reading to all especially new puppy owners.

This is an excellent book. It was easy to read, interesting and very touching. A must for any dog owner and dog lovers. It shows the devotion dogs have for their owners and vice versa. Hazel did wonders for "Connie" to make her canine friend happy and in doing so was rewarded with the love and devotion that "Connie" gave her and this clever dog made Hazel's life easier and more enriched.
The added bonus is that there is a section that gives some very sound education for dog owners to teach their own dogs.
A book to really recommend.

A book by a dog owner and behaviourist talking about her life with animals, particularly dogs. Very sweet and full of enthusiasm for her dogs and dog training.

Also includes tips and advice on unwanted dog behaviors like barking.

Worth a read by dog lovers.
