Although I haven't read this translation recently, I can't agree with D. D. Ayuso's review. I saw the original RSC production when it was performed at the Playhouse in London. Although the script has been modernised a little it comes vibrantly to life on stage. The poetry of the original is certainly of the highest order but we forget that the Spanish audience who enjoyed De Vega's play in the Renaissance would have been utterly familiar with its language. What Johnston has done is avoided the awful practice of translating an old play into ye olde English. Cod Shakespeareanisms would have been far worse than the zingy, if unflowery, language which David Johnston uses.

So if you want to read the play and appreciate it as literature accept that no translation is really going to do the job and learn spanish. But if you want a script which works very well in production and was good enough for the RSC to get their teeth into, then go for this.

This is NOT Lope de Vega's masterful comedy, known to the English-speaking world as _The Dog in the Manger_. It has the same title, and plot, and the same characters, but this modern-language prose translation gives you none of the magic of Lope's poetry -- which is what makes the original work such a delight in the first place!

Imagine Juliet saying, 'Hey, Romeo, why're you Romeo?,' or 'Call a rose whatever you want, it will still smell nice,' and you get the idea...

In short, if you're looking for a good translation of this Golden Age Spanish classic, this is not it.
