Product Description

Review

"Mr. Bunker has written a raw, unromantic, naturalistic crime drama more lurid than anything the noiresque Chandlers or Hammetts ever dreamed up . . . "Dog Eat Dog" is an exciting, tightly constructed crime thriller with a fully realized cast of characters."--"The New York Times"

"It's easy to see why Bunker has acquired such diverse admirers as Quentin Tarantino and William Styron . . . What distinguishes Byron from other crime writers is his ability to convey the compassion dormant within his violent criminals without resorting to excess luridness, sympathy, or moralism."--"Publishers Weekly"

"Edward Bunker is among the tiny band of American prisoner writers whose work possesses integrity, craftsmanship, and moral passion . . . An artist with a unique and compelling voice."--"William Styron"

Product Description

Carved from a lifetime of experience that runs the gamut from incarceration to liberation, Dog Eat Dog, is the story of three men fresh out of prison who have the task of adapting to civilian life. The California three stikes law looms over them, but what the hell, they're going to do it, and they're going to do it their way. Dog Eat Dog is the tale of three unremorseful criminals with two felony convictions apiece and no more chances. Under California's 'Three Strikes' law, one more conviction - even for shoplifting - carries a mandatory life sentence with no prospect of remission. But a law intended to deter career criminals has the opposite effect on these three. Combined they have spent a lifetime behind bars and have no idea, or intention, of leading a straight life under rules set by a system they have never belonged to.

Hardcore 1 Aug 2004

Bunker's best novel and one of the defining works of modern crime writing, 'Dog Eat Dog' is a work of hardcore genius. The prose is spare and incisive, the plot relentless, the action compelling, but more than that this is a heartfelt indictment of the US penal system by ex-con Bunker.

Lean, mean and holding court on the street.

I happened upon The Animal Factory by chance and loved it...So the chance to buy two of Bunkers' stories in one publication seemed an ideal way to read more! Like all of Bunkers' tales they revolve around a life of crime, but in this case one story follows a young boy through an emotional tumble into the abyss of the underworld and the other follows an already hardened criminal determined to keep out of jail, not by becoming law abiding but by more careful planning of his crimes! Great stories, great characters, as close to the underworld as I want to get!

Edward Bunker writes excellent, realistic crime fiction - this is the real Mccoy. The book is well written, superbly paced, shocking in places and always fascinating. The perfect book to start if you have never read this authors work before. Quentin Tarintino is a big fan and other crime writers are also admirers of his work. I am a little bit surprised that the author is not more well known. He tells the story of three 'friends' out of prison trying to get by and make a criminal living. You really get inside the characters and the story feels a little bit like the film Heat (Michael Mann would love this work)but with a Neil McCauley type character (he was the main criminal played by Robert Deniro in the film Heat) starting from scratch following release from prison. The tone is foreboding and the atmosphere is dark and cold but never dull or contrived. I loved the ending of the book which reminded me a little of No Country for Old Men - infact this book helped me understand that book so much better. If you want to read a crime story written by a real criminal then this is for you. A really excellent read and better than I thought it would be. Top class crime writing -needs a wider audience.
