Review

I can't imagine ever being disappointed by a Helen Cooper picture book. She is the quintessential children's illustrator, producing a consistently high quality artwork which never lacks child-friendliness. Carousel Helen Cooper surpasses her wildly successful Pumpkin Soup with this touching story about the power of childhood imagination and its immense capacity for delight and terror. The illustrations are gorgeous and there is a recipe for delicious non Dog Biscuits at the end of the story. Irish Post 20081206 Helen Cooper, the author of the award-winning The Bear Under the Stairs, has delivered another gorgeously daft, funny tale for tots. The Sunday Business Post 20081207 Cooper is an assured storyteller. The lyrical text is packed with subtle rhymes and is very pleasing to read aloud. The Evening Standard 20090122 A wonderful picture book. The Sunday Tribune 20081214 The lyrical text is packed with subtle rhymes and is pleasing to read aloud. Eastern Daily Press 20081223 Award-winning illustrator Helen Cooper's hugely imaginative dog fantasy carries the reader on a wild and explosive night-time caper after Bridget eats a dog biscuit by mistake. The Times 20090214

My daughter has quite a collection of Helen Cooper books and so I was confident before ordering this that she would enjoy it. And, while nothing is ever going to quite match Helen Cooper's "Pumpkin Soup", I was not disappointed. The illustrations are appealing and detailed, and the story is entertaining:
A young girl eats a dog biscuit and is then persuaded that she is going to turn into a dog. To her dismay, a short time later she can actually feel it happening, and "she wished she hadn't eaten that biscuit". I like this story line because it is based around the things adults say without thinking and the panic it instills in young children who take everything as the truth ("Oh no, you shouldn't have touched the toad, you might turn into one", was one that had my sister crying for days on end, carefully examining her skin for any signs of change). And any adult who has been brave enough to read the possible side effects of medication they have been prescribed will, in a similar vein, be sure they are developing a rash or having breathing difficulties.
In the case of the dog biscuit story, all's well that ends well and she is finally assured that she is not going to end up with a tail and fur.
All in all a good read and recommended.

A delightful book 7 July 2010
Format:Paperback
We loved this imaginative book! The product description above is a bit inaccurate, however, as Bridget eats the dog biscuit while at a neighbour's (child minder's?) home. The older woman tells her (jokingly) that she will turn into a dog now, and little Bridget believes this might be true. The fantasy is carried on in her mind, and once home, she acts wild and dog-like until bedtime when she falls asleep and has a wild dog adventure in her dream. When she awakens, frightened, her mother comes in and at last notices that something is not right, and Bridget tells her about the dog biscuit.

The ending (involving both Mum and the older woman friend reassuring Bridget.....and the making of "human being" biscuits, i.e. gingerbread people) is reassuring to the child hearing or reading the story. I thought the whole book was lovely; it was right on target in addressing the anxieties a child may have over something an adult would see as very minor.

We borrowed this book from the library. I found it quite strange. An odd story about a girl who thinks she's turning into a dog after eating dog biscuit, and the writing is an odd mixture of rhyming and ordinary text which, after books like room on the broom which are all rhyming, I found unusual. My daughter (about 4 when we borrowed this I think) absolutely LOVED this book. She's not really one to read the same book over and over generally but this one was a favourite for night after night. It really seemed to capture her imagination. So that's why I gave it 5 stars.
