1.0 out of 5 stars Quite frankly a waste of money, 20 Mar 2000
This review is from: Why Does Working @ My Computer Hurt So Much?: A Comprehensive Guide to Help You Prevent and Treat Computer Induced Repetitive Stress Injuries (Paperback)
After reading this book I found the characters very childish & the book boring. It did not go into enough detail about the computer set up nor did it give any understanding as to why you should set your workstation up the way it has stated. It gives no thought to the different jobs that would use PC's and what other equipment they would need on their desk. Is there just a monitor on the desk or the hard drive box as well etc. The amount of space you have on your desk makes an immense difference so problems such as tidiness should also be taken into account. It mentions document holders but not where to position them so as to avoid potential damaging eye problems. The user positioning is in too little detail also. The book fails to mention that there are items available on the market (anti-glare screens, wrist rests etc.) for those suffering the problems they have written about, nor does it tell you which to avoid. This book is also poorly written as it gives no relevant details about the rest of your environment when working with PC's which you should take into account in order to ensure everything is correct. e.g. lighting. As a Health & Safety Officer, while I am aware that lay people should not be blinded with science but they should be given ALL the relevant information needed in order to make informed decisions. If all of the relevant information cannot be supplied, the book should state that you should do some extra reading & a suitable reading list should be supplied. After asking a lay person to read this book, they said that they found it too childish with the characters portrayed and assumed it was for for those with sight problems hence the large print. They also stated that they had not realised how basic ergonomics is after reading this book. "There's nothing to it" was their comment. While ergonomics is common sense and simple on the surface, it is not basic. There is much more than this book leads you to believe and it can become very in depth. After asking another lay person (with a little knowledge) what they thought, there were too many unanswered questions. They also commented that their children had learn't to read with this size of print so they found the book insulting for this reason. It would appear that my nine year old niece got more out of this book than anyone else however, she was confused by the meaning of some of the words. Decent research as well as how you write a book is what makes it interesting. Sorry but I could go on forever with complaints about this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I've found on repetitive stress injuries., 28 April 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Why Does Working @ My Computer Hurt So Much?: A Comprehensive Guide to Help You Prevent and Treat Computer Induced Repetitive Stress Injuries (Paperback)
"Why does working @ my computer hurt so much" is the best book I've found on preventing repetitive stress injuries. It filled with practical information for anyone who spends long hours in front of a computer (secretaries, programmers, writers, college students).

The authors, both physical therapists, provide guidelines for arranging your workstation and how to sit there once it's arranged. The best part is an extensive list of exercises for your back, neck, jaw, thumbs, wrists, elbows, and shoulders designed specifically to prevent repetitive stress injuries. In addition, each exercise is illustrated so you never have to wonder if your doing the exercises correctly.

Once again, a great book!
