Product Description

The global economy has fallen to pieces like a cheap jigsaw puzzle in an earthquake. Now it is time for the financial world to pick up the baton of change, hold it proudly above its head, and club some sense into itself with it.
Luckily Andy Zaltzman, comedian and economics novice extraordinaire, is here to help. In this much-needed and hilarious companion to the crisis, he confronts the big issues side-on.
Questions answered and/or dodged include:
Is human life still economically viable?
What face should a politician pull whilst discussing the economy?
If you put an infinite number of monkeys in the London Stock Exchange, would the markets go up or down?

There is a lot of cheap fun to be poked at bankers these days. Andy Zaltzmann wisely doesn't do this. He has come up with an inventive, original and deliriously funny take on the credit crunch. His excursions into the surreal are no weirder than the reality. Professional economists would be hard pushed to fault the way in which he analyses the flaws of modern methods of money creation from the viewpoint of the stand-up comic in the street. The BBC should sack Robert Peston and give his job to Zaltzmann, who is a lot funnier, far less patronising and understands finance just as well.

Andy Zaltzman is best known for his satirical podcast with John Oliver - The Bugle. So firstly, if you like that, you will love this. He is also an occasional contributor to BBC radio comedy shows and is an avid sports fan.

Presumably by his own good fortune, and not by any degree of skill, Zaltzman has managed to write a topical, satirical book which is as relevant now, three years after publication as it was when it first came out.

If you know The Bugle like I do, you will read this with the sound of his voice reading the words on the page, which is a very unnerving sensation, as it is written in the same style as his vocal delivery; over-cooked puns and metaphors, ridiculous sporting references and made up facts. However, behind the nonsense lies an uneasy suggestion that he does actually know what he's talking about, but doesn't want anyone to know.

So in summary, if you enjoy his rants and puns as a stand up comedian and broadcaster, then this will be more than satisfactory :)

Very funny 25 Aug 2009

Having read it I can happily declare that Andy Zaltzman's book is better than he has described it himself! The book is wordy and intelligent and made me laugh a lot. Does anything eat bankers is one long question and answer session including the title but you can also expect answers to other important questions such as: how fat does a cat have to be to qualify as a "fat cat?"

I have read another humorous take on the economy this year and truth be told I think Dave Barry's Money Secrets: Like: Why Is There a Giant Eyeball on the Dollar? was funnier. Dave is lesser known in the UK; and his humor is lower brow than Andy who really is a radio 4 comedian though both are very intelligent writers.

Dave Barry on taxes "The gross national product is several trillion dollars, of which one-third is sent to the government in the form of taxes for the express purpose of being wasted."

Andy Zaltzman on bailouts "if you do find yourself in a situation where you have to bail out a financial institution, whether than be a bank, a small business or a daughter, the basic calculation should be a sum that seems reasonable for the purpose, multiplied my a contingency factor of 10,000 percent."

Andy is a great comedian; and is currently working on a very impressive new kitchen; so please help out and buy this book. The cover proudly annouces that 10p will be donated to the economy for each copy sold; so do your part and end the recession.
