Product Description

Product Description

Highly acclaimed as the definitive reference work on Vatican II, The Documents of Vatican II features eminently readable translations of all sixteen council documents in English, together with introductions and commentaries by noted Roman Catholic bishops and Council experts and essays by Protestant and Orthodox clergy and scholars. Among the distinguished contributors are Avery Dulles, S.J., Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan, Robert McAfee Brown, John Courtney Murray, S.J., William A. Norgren, R.A.F. MacKenzie, S.J., Clement J. McNaspy, Bishop G. Emmett Carter and Bishop Robert H. Mueller.

The Second Vatican Council—1962-1965—remains a watershed event in the history of the Catholic Church. In 2012, as the church celebrates the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Council, Catholics and many other Christians will want to return to the source documents to better understand the church of tradition and build a more responsive community of believers for the present and future.

"We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to America Press for this new release of the Abbott edition of the Documents of Vatican II. For those who serve the vision of Vatican II, we now, once again, have at our disposal a helpful translation of the documents accompanied by commentaries and notes from leading Catholic scholars and ecumenists that can lead to a more profound appropriation of the council's teaching. These tools, along with important supporting documentation of the council, now available in a Kindle version, are a great gift to the church today."

-- Richard Gaillardetz, co-author of Keys to the Council: Unlocking the Teaching of Vatican II.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful addition to your bookshelf 27 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the edition of the documents we all remember from the 1960s. I had parted with mine to a charity shop some years ago, and recently realised that was a mistake. There may be some quibbles about the translation from the Latin here and there, but there are other translations around if you want to compare and contrast. All in all, a useful compendium.

2.0 out of 5 stars not a study document 28 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am disappointed that this is not a working doc but can only be used to read through the content. You can not look up references. It is not for study.

This book is important for every Catholic [ arguably every Christian ] to possess and read. Surprisingly, it contains essays and
comments by Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant Christians.Very illuminating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vatican II in digital 7 Nov 2012
By agelessage - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In 1966 I was happy to acquire the Abbott-Gallagher paper edition of The Documents of Vatican II. It contained the actual text of the 16 Council documents, with an Introduction and Response for each one, as well as the Papal speeches convoking, opening and closing the Council, and an exhaustive 44 page index.

In 2012 my hard copy edition of the Council was yellowed and in tatters. I was wondering would it be possible to get a fresh copy of the book when one day my eye caught a news item promising that the very same Abbott-Gallagher edition was about to appear in digital form to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Council.

As soon as the digital form of the Council was available I purchased it from Amazon for my fire kindle, and have been using it ever since.

I find the digital form of the documents immensely attractive. The Table of Contents at the beginning makes it easy to locate the particular document I am looking for. The text is clear and very readable. I quickly mastered how to race from page to page, or document to document. At the very time the digital edition appeared I was beginning a weekly blog on the documents of Vatican II, so for me it was a timely benefit.

I have little to say by way of criticism, but there have been slips-up in proof-reading, for example in the document on Divine Revelation, n.3, where it reads: "God, who through the World creates all things". It should read "Word", not "World" - typographically minor, but theologically major.

I missed the exhaustive Index. Maybe it is there and I will eventually find it. But even without the Index I think the digital edition of the Documents of Vatican II is of great benefit to those still interested in the Council, particularly since the pages are not going to yellow or fall apart, as happened to my paper copy of 1966.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just the Documents - Great Comments as well 9 Sep 2012
By Thomas J. Berna - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Originally I purchased the Kindle version so I would have the documents from Vatican II at my fingertips (the printed version I own is best described as "lug-able"). I was not aware that this volume contains comments from notable authors, Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox.

The text is very readable, and the comments are well-written.

The only drawback of this volume is that it was published in 1966 - I would like to read comments TODAY - 50 years after the council started.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refresher course.. 28 Nov 2012
By Sara - Published on Amazon.com

This is a MUST for any Catholic trying to understand what Vatican II actually set about to do. It was NOT to revise any of the Church's teaching, it was simply trying to get the Bishops more organized and exploring new ways to instruct the already established teaching of Holy Mother Church. Nothing in the actual teachings of the Church were altered by Vat. II.
