Product Description

Review

In the era of evidence-based medicine and increasing patient access to medical literature it is essential that the clinician of the twenty-first century can weigh up the evidence supporting their own practice and justify their clinical decisions. Another fantastic edition of this book is very welcome --Adam Feather, Consultant and Senior Medical Lecturer, London

This book systematically tackles the complexities of Critical Appraisal. A superb aid for the busy clinician --Rupinderbir Deol, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

This book is intended to be a comprehensive guide to the skills and knowledge doctors require to effectively appraise clinical research. Whilst all that sounds extremely exciting to the budding academic, from a practical perspective the real question is will this book help me pass my exams? Although I have not read this book from cover to cover, I have used it on a number of occasions and found it to be clear, concise and very easy to understand. This made it easy to apply to different scenarios and studies. The book includes some of the courses key themes in PP, such as study designs and basic statistics with examples using clinical scenarios. The chapters are set out in a structured and easy-toread format, with useful summary boxes at the end. I particularly like that this book assumes no prior knowledge of topic, making it very good for first years to get hold. I would definitely recommend this guide for all years sitting exams and struggling with concepts in population perspective . --Jen, Sphincter Magazine Spring 2012, Liverpool Medical School

Product Description

The Doctor s Guide to Critical Appraisalis a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the knowledge and skills clinicians need to appraise clinical research papers. The book teaches the reader how to identify the strengths and weaknesses of study methods, how to interpret results with confidence and how to identify which results can make a real difference to patients. The book takes a back-to-basics approach and has a uniquely logical format. Rather than simply guiding the reader through commonly used checklists, the book aims to educate the reader on understanding the essential components of a good research paper and why certain techniques are important. Every chapter focuses on a single topic, assuming no prior knowledge. Clinical scenarios, figures and exercises emphasise important principles. This book is aimed primarily at medical students and doctors in all medical specialties and of all grades. The book content covers the areas examined in postgraduate exams, including MRCGP, MRCPsych, MRCOG, FCEM, ISFE, MFPH, FPM and RANZCP.The first two editions have been used by a wide range of other healthcare professionals, including dentists, psychologists, pharmacists , nurses and researchers. The book is of value to anyone evaluating the quality of research papers, anyone starting out in research and wanting to understand the strengths and weaknesses of research papers, and anyone involved in supervising or taking part in academic journal clubs.
