Unless you are under a doctor's care and have been taking statins for a number of years, give serious consideration to using red yeast rice. It was recommended to me by my pharmacist-friend. Red yeast rice is the base ingredient in all statins, according to him; it is just as effective as statins, but much kinder to your liver if taken over a long period.
Doctor's Best, 1200mg with CQ10 is the best formulation I have found in terms of value for money and composition. Many red yeast rice tablets are only 600mg and do not have CQ10, which is an important addition--if you are taking statins, you should be taking CQ10 also--and this is my doctor's advice, not mine--as it restores a healthy blood balance.
Don't take my word for it, do the research like I did and then decide for yourself. However, 3 years ago my LDL was 9.25. It is now consistently 4.5--and my doctor thinks I've been doing a great job with my diet!
