5.0 out of 5 stars Yes Saturday Evening TV was this good., 28 April 2003

Probably the best of the Tom Baker/Louise Jameson pairings. A wonderfully dark Victorian London, with fun Sherlock Holmes pastiches interwoven with a very dark plot. The theatre makes a superb setting, and at times this is genuinely scary (okay forget the scene with the rat...).

5.0 out of 5 stars This one's got claws, 18 May 2009
Well as a fan I'm bound to be generous, but despite a few (obvious) flaws - yes we won't talk about the rat - this is a mint example of classic 70s Doctor Who. Those who grew up with Pertwee, Troughton, Hartnell, Davison or even Sylvester McCoy (sorry Colin) will no doubt argue that theirs was the golden era of Doctor Who; however in terms of scripts, characterisations and cast, this really was the show's best period. Baker is clearly having a ball in deerstalker and cape, as he investigates the mysterious death of a young serving girl in Victorian London, while the fog billows and eerie cries escape from the gloomy Thames. From these atmospheric opening scenes, to the superb double-act of theatre impresario Henry Jago and Police pathologist Professor Lightfoot; Robert Holmes' script fair crackles with energy and wit. Sinister Oriental magicians, opium dens, The Doctor's `savage' travelling companion Leela in a dress; there is so much going on here it's brilliant.
