Caressed with the most delicate of touches that ensure that this original soundtrack cannot be mistaken for anything other than DOCTOR WHO, master craftsman, Murray Gold has, once again, artistically surpassed the eager expectation of millions of fans who relish in reliving the Time Lord's fantastical world (read: universe) sans visuals, enveloping themselves in an aural landscape befitting a similarly eager Gallifreyian seeking the new, the unexplored, and the unexplained.

This dual-OST release from SILVA SCREEN embraces two Special episodes (THE DOCTOR, THE WIDOW AND THE WARDROBE [2011] and THE SNOWMEN [2012]) as part of Matt Smith's 11th (or 14th ) era as the iconic `mad man in a box', and it consolidates the composer's musical mastery and effectively delivering a Thesis on how to compose specifically for the `small screen' whilst encompassing a vision and a tempered temerity to think that it was actually to be delivered on the `silver screen' (i.e. the cinema).

Instantaneously, from the first musical bar (or measure ) and from the intricate high-wire space-defying phrases, you know that it is Murray Gold and DOCTOR WHO. This is a remarkable feat that can only be mirrored by saying the same thing for the works of John Williams and STAR WARS or the prolific British composer, John Barry (1933-2011) and JAMES BOND. Illustrious company that Gold should be proud, and, unashamedly, mildly overawed by.

With his OST, like others that he has provided since 2005, Gold does not compromise or patronise the viewers/listeners with insubstantial or predictable `television stings' or aural detritus that common-place (plundered from nefarious Royalty-free sound archives) in today's broadcasts. Isn't about time, for Gold only, that the OST was re-defined as UST?

OK, there may not be any obviously outstanding tracks here (like some of the earlier offerings) but this is a lovely album which 'flows' nicely all the way through. Some interesting variations on some familiar themes too without becoming repetitive. .. Beautiful work as always from Mr Gold.

Murray Gold still holds sway as far as giving the new Doctor Who series an epic sound, form signature tunes for Clara and other companions, to big rousing finale overtures.
If your a Who fan buy it and enjoy, equally if you enjoy TV music its worth a purchase too.

The music of murray gold is fantastic. You know what the actors are doing, whilst the music is playing. Some very tense and dramatic music.......superlative.. Very prompt and reliable service.

I like Murray Gold and his scores for Doctor Who. Cd's 1 - 3 (incorporating Series 1 - 4) were fantastic. The Specials was a little non-descript for me. Series 5 and A Christmas Carol were a return to form. Series 6 has it's moments and I'm yet to get comfortable with series 7.

There are some fine moments in all but I think that the main reason I can't settle with the double discs in particular is because they are too long (that's not to say cut them down) and only take a small part of each episode covered in the season. What I tend to do is wander in my listening experience so I am drifting on to other thoughts by the end. It doesn't help that I can't quite visualise a scene or episode for every piece of music without reading the cover sleeve. (It certainly doesn't help if I have the ipod on random play) Perhaps I just need to be more disciplined, turn off the lights and listen (note to self to try again)

The advantage of this release (along with A Christmas Carol) is that is concentrates on a single (2 in this case) adventure so you get time to make friends with the story and the music.

The adventure TDTW&TW (I could have typed it all out I suppose) is a very twee adventure (that's not a lisp) It starts well but suffers from no real threat and some unnecessary cameos (Least favourite Xmas Who from 1/2 hour in). However the score by Gold is gorgeous. It starts with Bombast as the Doctor escapes the spaceship and is pretty fun and jolly throughout. Now if you write music I'm sure you'll know what instruments convey the best Christmas feel and Murray has obviously found the right tone to have this feeling run through the score.
