Video Description

The Visitation:
The Doctor attempts to take Tegan back to Heathrow Airport but the Tardis arrives in the 17th century instead of the 20th. The time travellers discover that a space capsule has crash-landed nearby and that its alien occupants, 3 Terileptil prison escapees, intend to wipe out all indigenous life on Earth by releasing rats infected with an enhanced strain of the great plague. The creatures are also using a sophisticated androad to strike terror into the local plague. Aided by intinerant thespian Richard Mace, the Doctor traces tracks the Terileptils to their base in Pudding Lane, London.

Black Orchid:
The Tardis arrives on Earth in 1925 where, due to a case of mistaken identity, the Doctor ends up playing in a local cricket match. The travellers then accept an invitation to a masked fancy dress ball, but events take on a more sinister tone as a number of murders are perpetrated at the country home of their host Lord Cranleigh. The Doctor comes under suspicion but the murderer is eventually revealed to be Cranleigh's brother George, who has been kept locked up in the house ever since returning from an expedition up the Amazon to find the legendary black orchid. George mistakes Nyssa for his former fiancee Ann Talbot who looks identical and takes her up to the roof of the house.

Very good. 23 Dec 2000

Both these adventures are set in history and both are from the Peter Davison era. In 'The Visitation', the Terileptils have arrived in 17th century England and plan to wipe out the human race. These are really rubbery monsters and are not remembered very fondly, but this is still an enjoyable yarn. The second adventure, 'Black Orchid', is similar to a Miss Marple episode. The Doctor arrives with his companions in 1920s England and they acquaint themselves with an upper crust family. During their stay at the family's luxurious mansion, a murderer strikes and the Doctor and his companions are held responsible.

This is one of the best stories from the Peter Davison era of Doctor Who. While attempting to return Tegan to Heathrow Airport the Tardis arrives in 1666 when the plague was spreading through England. He discovers that there are other new arrivals from another planet who are planning to destroy all life on Earth.

There is a delightfull guest star in the form of Michael Robbins who is perhaps best known for his roll as Arthur in On The Buses. As with most of the classic Doctor Who stories this dvd is packed with special features including a very amusing commentary with Peter Davison, Janet Fielding (Tegan), Mathew Waterhouse (Adric), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa) and the director of this story Peter Moffatt.

This is the American dvd release and is region 1 coded so you will need a dvd player that plays region 1 coded disks. The actual dvd content is the same as the British release with the exception of the dvd sleve design which I much prefer to the British one. So if you want to see a piece of the best classic Doctor Who series from the Peter Davison era than this dvd is well worth adding to your collection.

I am going to be mildly controversial here and support this DOCTOR WHO release!
As a long-term fan I am naturally nostalgic and wear 'rose-tinted spectacles' whenever watching Dctor Who; what genuine fanboy wouldn't? Tom Baker was my first (and favourite) Doctor and Peter Davison comes second - mainly due to his tenure being during my adolescent and formative years. I remember both of these stories clearly and fondly: Black Orchid is one of the best Doctor Who stories ever realised on TV - mainly because it's so cosy and redolent of the kind of fictional England that only ever exists on TV, (think Midsomer Murders, Poirot et al). Although, as often stated, the plot is fairly mundane, it is a lot of fun - not one but TWO foxy Nyssas, a marginalised Tegan, an intriguing sub-plot and that all-pervading 'Englishness', summed up by cricket, high tea and The Charleston!
The Visitation also works well as a historical story - bearing in mind the limited budget of the early 80's the BBC always produced great sets and imagery when producing period pieces for Doctor Who. Carefree actor Richard Mace lends a lighthertedness to the proceedings, the Terileptils (whilst fairly rubbery!) form distracting villains and their colourful android is well realised.
Overall a solid pair of stories see Peter Davison getting into his stride as The Doctor and hint at the sad, yet somehow welcome, impending demise of the tiresome Adric...
