BACKGROUND: `The Ultimate Evil' is the second in Target's `Missing Season' series of adventures. These are stories that had been commissioned for Colin Baker's second season before Dr Who was put on hiatus and therefore they never made it to the small screen but were novelised by the script writers in 1989. The others in this series are `The Nightmare Fair' and `Mission to Magnus'.

REVIEW: First of, to qualify my rating which might seem inordinately high, I have rated this book within the confines of what it is - the unassuming novelization of a Dr Who TV script that is only accessible in this format.

To start with the negatives; this is perhaps not highly original and it does borrows heavily from season 22 which was naturally a strong inspiration for the Missing Adventures. (For example Dwarf Mordant could easily be Sil). It is also often formulaic, and not particularly profound or intellectual although it does raise some interesting issues and ideas. Also there are occasions when the prose doesn't flow smoothly, and therefore the sentence has to be re-read.

Having got all that out the way I must confess that I find this a highly enjoyable and interesting book that is executed well enough and has characterised the Doctor and Peri fantastically well. I could visualise everything very vividly and it just oozed classic (season 22) Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant. Their dialogue was always spot on (in contrast to Graham Williams Missing Season adventure `The Nightmare Fair' where the Doctor is given some incongruous expressions). It was also better plotted than that book and imo would have made a fabulous tv episode were it not for that hiatus. You get thrust straight into the plot and action which moves swiftly and the Doctor features heavily from the start. I loved this book when I first read it and re-read it as a child and even now it still stands up as a short (144 pages) but decent book well worth reading if you liked the sixth doctor. I would rather read this than many of the New Adventures which often seemed a bit too pretentious and disappointing. And it even made me laugh with one joke that would have been judged too risqué for kids tv by JNT.

SUMMARY: An enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Especially for those who thought Colin Baker's reign as the Doctor was cut tragically short.
