5.0 out of 5 stars Praise for The Witch Hunters 28 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Steve Lyons has really captured the spirit of the early Hartnell stories in "The Witch Hunters". The dialogue of the four main characters is superb, and I could virtually hear the original actors speaking the words on the page as I read them. "The Witch Hunters" was the first historical DR WHO novel I'd read, and I wasn't sure initially that I would enjoy it, but I soon got caught up in the events of the Salem witch trials and found it a real page turner. Having finished the book I almost wish that it existed as a television story in its own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back William Hartnell 18 Oct 2001
Format:Paperback
This will be a very short review. The Witch Hunters is probably the best Doctor Who story i have ever read (or seen for that matter). Steve Lyons has perfectly recreated the atmosphere and characters of the first Doctor's era - The images in my head were all the more striking for being in black and white.
And what a subject to explore, the Salem witch trials! I have to admit to wondering how the author would be able to explain away the presence of the TARDIS and it's crew in such a well documented period of history, but in my opinion he has done this seamlessly.
Without wanting to give away the end of this glorious novel i will just say that i was moved to tears by the way the Doctor resolved the most overwhelming dilemma of the story.
You must read this book even if you are not a big fan of the series as, on top of anything else, it gives a fascinating insight into that terrifying period of our history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Salem's plot 15 April 2011
By Michael Finn TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
What begins as a few weeks living in a small Puritanical village in Massachusetts during the 1690's, eventually turns into a nightmare as Susan succumbs or even contributes to the rising superstitious hysteria of the time. This is a well researched historical piece that could sit alongside such classic Who as The Aztecs quite comfortably. Like The Aztecs the Tardis crew are divided by the temptation to change history, this time in the face of so much injustice sparked by the mass hysteria that led to the Salem witch trials. How can a writer who produced such a poor effort as The Murder Game come up with something as accomplished as this? Outstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Witch Hunters 10 May 2013
Format:Paperback
The Witch Hunters by Steve Lyons is the first 1st Doctor novel in the PDA range and is a classic Hartnell era historical story.

I've always had a slight interest in the Salem witch trials, and have read a couple of books about them and witchcraft in general so was looking forward to seeing how good Steve Lyons' research was and what kind of a spin he would put on the story. From the word go, he has everything pretty much spot on. It is clear that the poor woman being tried as a witch is innocent, and the author manages to sum up the hysteria of the trials in those few pages by mentioning neighbouring land disputes, and the acting/smirks of the children.

The premise of The Witch Hunters is that Susan makes friends with the people of Salem and is then horrified to discover that they all die due to the witch trials so goes back to try and stop it. When the TARDIS crew get back, they find Salem in hysteria, which is affecting Susan's psychic abilities and they are soon accused of being witches themselves.

The story seems to drag in places, but retains it's appeal nonetheless. Steve Lyons leaves you guessing right until the end if the TARDIS crew are infact able to change history, and indeed to the Doctor's motives. The ending is done superbly, very emotional and very well written. Applause indeed to the author.

The 1st Doctor is perhaps the easiest of the Doctors to get right on paper. His era was before we knew anything about the Time Lords and Gallifrey so he is essentially a quintessential grumpy old man who can travel through time and space.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wot, no Billy Fluffs...? 25 Jun 2007
By Quark
Format:Paperback
Steve Lyons consistently proves himself one of the best Who authors. The Witch Hunters, as other reviews state, is a note-perfect Hartnell Historical; in fact, the only unconvincing aspect of it is that Hartnell never gets his lines wrong...

It'll seem slow to readers only used to the new series, but it's perfectly in keeping with the more reflective, discursive tone of the Hartnell era. Makes you want to revisit Hartnell era videos - and find out more about the Salem Witch Trials, as `rassybeds' says below. Lyons has clearly researched the era, and the events of Arthur Miller's 'The Crucible', thoroughly - but other strengths of this novel are his neat, lean prose, and highly competent characterisation and plotting.

One of the most subtle, well-written and thoughtful Past Adventures. Just don't expect ray-guns and chases down corridors. 'Chesterfield...!'

5.0 out of 5 stars The missing story? 21 Oct 2003
Format:Paperback
Reading this book feels like the novelisation of a missing script. Obviously Miller's "The Crucuible" is a big influence, but the characterisation of the TARDIS crew is excellent. The Doctor is very much as portrayed on screen.
I found the subject so fascinating that I next read a factual book on the Salem Witch Trials - A Delusion of Satan.

For me this book lives up to Sydney Newman's original vision for Doctor Who.
