This story is beautifully read and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed it as a children's story set by the seaside featuring a harbour and lighthouse, with 'pesky kids' unmasking the villain and thwarting a magically laid plan to bring eternal winter. The cat is a truly wonderful cat. The character of the girl who leads the adventure is very well crafted and her personality is engaging. Her relationship with her mother is both warm and a little sad. The encounter in the second hand shop whilst trying to donate a bucket and spade is a classic. The story champions the kind of values traditional to children's literature; friendship, trust, bravery. Yes, i enjoyed it as a gently unfolding children's 'quest'.

In Cardiff, a very large, Scottish dog probably called Steven, wagged a very short & subservient tail as it barked, "I'm going to mention a book in DOCTOR WHO SERIES 7, called SUMMER FALLS which has been written by Amelia Pond. It's truly insignificant to the plotting of the NEW SERIES and, as fans will buy any old tat nowadays, I want it to be published as a book and audio novelisation. And you'll make a bit of cash from it."

And as the resonating barking was so ferocious and compelling, BBC BOOKS and AUDIOGO, it would seem, had no choice as no right-minded publisher would condone such insidiously inconsequence and banality if it was not to satisfy a `brand licence' that they have previously agreed to.

Quite frankly, James Goss' SUMMER FALLS - I cannot bring myself to prefix the title with `DOCTOR WHO' as that would patronise the broadcasting legend's previous output - is the most tedious, dire, audiobook that he have the misfortune to listen to, and even my nine year-old DOCTOR WHO protégé concurred that it's "...pathetically boring...I don't want to listen to a story about kids...put concrete in my ears..." If this young, insightful DOCTOR WHO fan realised within four or five chapters that SUMMER FALLS failed to present any redeeming content then why didn't the author, or the publisher/s (BBC BOOKS and AUDIOGO) and/or the BBC DOCTOR WHO Brand Executives?

Whilst the previously released (subtle) tie-ins (DOCTOR WHO - THE ANGEL'S KISS, DOCTOR WHO - DEVIL IN THE SMOKE) were marginally successful, this is one tie-in that should not have been commissioned.

Needless to say, being force-fed processed cow's stomach on stale Ryvita cracker bread is more appealing than having to endure SUMMER FALLS passed chapter three.
