Product Description

Tom Baker stars as the Fourth Doctor in the fourth of five thrilling brand new adventures, with Susan Jameson as Mrs. Wibbsey, Richard Franklin as Mike Yates, and David Troughton as the Visitor.
It's been many months since the Doctor was in Hexford, and Mrs. Wibbsey keenly feels his absence. As her grave suspicions about her new neighbor grow, she is in danger of becoming ostracized from village life. When Mike Yates turns up at Nest Cottage with a visitor in tow, Mrs. Wibbsey's life is turned even further upside down. Why has this strange new fellow appeared - and can he really be who Mike thinks he is?
With UNIT watching the skies, and a strange forest growing daily around the village perimeter, it comes as little surprise when an enormous spaceship slides into view and dominates the skyline. Who is watching Hexford, and what do they want? Never has Mrs. Wibbsey needed the Doctor more. But can she cope with two...?
With Tom Baker as the Doctor, Susan Jameson as Mrs. Wibbsey, Richard Franklin as Mike Yates, Cornelius Garrett as Reverend Tonge, David Troughton as the Visitor, Nerys Hughes as Deirdre and Joanna Tope as Tish, "The Hexford Invasion" is the fourth of five linked stories written by Paul Magrs.

Aliens in Hexford 14 Jan 2012

Fourth cd in the Doctor Who: Serpent Crest series of audio dramas from the bbc, which feature Tom Baker returning to the role of the Doctor.

As with others this is one long episode on a single cd - running fifty six minutes [approx] and the only breaks in it are the usual cd chapter ones. Minimal sleeve notes on the inlay give cast and crew and copyright details, and have a mock up of a radio times listing for the story plus a few other images that may have a bearing on it.

This one picks up from where part three finished, with the Doctor having gone off on an errand and left his housekeeper Mrs. Wibbsey behind in the village of Hexford. There's no reprise of the story so far at the start but it might still be quite easy for new listeners to get into it. Although you would probably be better off starting with part one.

This is full cast audio drama rather than a reading, although it does have the occasional spot of narration, in this case from Susan Jameson in the Mrs. Wibbsey role. The opening bit of this is very good because it describes how her life passes waiting for the Doctor to return and captures the feeling of being a woman on her own in a village with twitching curtains and possibly suspicious neighbours.

Then UNIT turn up, with Mike Yates in charge. And a very special visitor along with him.

You will doubtless know who the visitor is before you read this review, but even so.....

David Troughton is superb in the role, capturing the vocal mannerisms of the character perfectly. And it helps that the character is also perfectly written.

He is there to warn about imminent danger approaching Hexford. But will the locals listen?

And when the Fourth Doctor returns, he and the visitor might just find themselves at cross purposes.

Far and away the best in this range yet. It succeeds by virtue of the visitor character giving it a great lift, and the script keeping his intentions an engima for a lot of the time. This makes it quite a delightful listen. And the Fourth Doctor is added at just the right point to take the whole thing up to the next level.

A convincing tale as well of what it might be like for a small community to come up against things beyond their comprehension, this is very much the first half of a two parter, and thus it ends on a very big cliffhanger. Which is resolved in Doctor Who: Serpent Crest: Survivors in Space: 5 (Dr Who). Which, if it can match the quality of this, should be well worth a listen.

With Susan Jameson's crotchety housekeeper, the delightfully named Mrs Wibbsey on narrative duties here, this is definitely the strongest of the Serpent's Crest audio series to date. With the Fourth Doctor off on his travels, things in Hexham are pretty pedestrian, however the arrival of Mike Yates and UNIT, along with a strangely familiar yet mysterious figure in a shabby frock coat and playing a recorder, sees events take a very bizarre turn, and pretty soon Mrs Wibbsey has more to worry about than the attentions of the local vicar...

Okay, I have to admit I loved this cd! This is the fourth part of the five part Serpent Crest series - in this story, Mrs Wibbsey is pretty much on her own, looking after things at Nest Cottage after the Doctor popped off to take Alex and Boolin home. Nine months later, she's getting a bit fed up - and finds herself obsessing about her new neighbour who seems to have a thing for bees, somethings Mrs W's not keen on.

So when Mike Yates, UNIT soldiers and a mysterious (or is he?) stranger turn up at Nest Cottage, things seem at least be changing. But what exactly is going on? Why is this stranger (who Mike insists is not really a stranger) delving around in the Doctor's belongings, and what's his game really? Why does Mrs Wibbsey find him suspicious? And what is everybody waiting for? What have UNIT been investigating, and why?

Much of the narration in the story, and a lot of the action, is that of Mrs Wibbsey - Susan Jameson is in top form here as Mrs Wibbsey, and it's nice to have Mike Yates back. The Fourth Doctor ("her Doctor", as Mrs Wibbsey says") returns towards the end of the episode and that's when things get really out of hand ... but what does it mean for Hexford, the Doctor, and Earth? Well, that's what we have to wait till episode five to find out, I guess! Can't wait!
