4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining collection, 24 Feb 2003
The First Doctor Box Set contains three stories from the William Hartnell years and they are an entertaining mixture. We have an alien story (The Sensorites), a historical piece (The Time Meddler) and a fun tale (The Gunfighters). Also there's a variety of companions. While Susan, Ian and Barbara (the first companions) appear in The Sensorites, the others feature Steven (played by an impressive Peter Purves), Vicki and Dodo. If you are too young to remember the Hartnell days, you will find these stories of great interest. The box is a good blend of the variety that made Doctor Who so entertaining and the production notes are of value too. This is recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super entertainment from William Hartnell and co., 17 Nov 2002

(REAL NAME)
The Sensorites: This is a very good story, full of mystery, murder and adventure. I see the first episode to be one of the finest in Dr Who's history.
The Time Meddler: Another superb story. William Hartnell and Peter Butterworth act very well together. The story is fine (even when the Doctor is absent for an episode), and the supporting cast is strong.
The Gunfighters: Quite why people dislike this story is unknown to me. It is fun from start to finish, and William Hartnell is super, the last time he seemed to actually remember his lines as the Doctor (see the War Machines where it seems he is making up his own story). The song (Last Chance Saloon) that pops up every so often is a nice treat, and the cast are not all that bad at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars "It's a space helmet for a cow!", 10 Jan 2006
By Jimmy Lovesey (Cardiff, South Wales) - See all my reviews
This box is a delghtful collection of classic episodes from William Hartnell's era as The Doctor in the 1960's. The three stories are all vastly different, which really makes one appreciate the variety of styles the show utilised in the 60's, a variety all too often less prevalent in its later years.

"The Sensorites" comprises 6 episodes from the first season of Who, which finds the Doc, his granddaughter Susan, and schoolteachers Ian and Barbara encountering an Earth spaceship of the future who are making contact with an alien race called the Sensorites. The Sensorites themselves are an incredibly well realised alien culture. Visually they are fantastic, with short actors being cast and much use of make up and prosthetics to create a truly alien looking creature. Their society is nicely sketched out, and the Dr and friends find themselves helping the Sensorites find a cure for a mysterious disease- for once the aliens are not all evil and intent on taking over the Earth!

"The Time Meddler" comprises the final 4 episodes of Who's second season, and is one of the stories which falls into a catergory commonly known as "pseudo-historicals" amongst Dr Who fandom. I.E. A story set in Earth's past but includes sci-fi elements other than the TARDIS and her crew. Upon arrival in England in the year 1066, the Doctor, Vicki, and Steven are perturbed to discover anachronistic oddities lying around, such as digital watches etc. It turns out the futuristic gadgets are the posessions of a local monk, who is in fact a time traveller from the Doctor's home planet - SHOCK! This is an important story in the Who mythos as it is the first time we meet another native of the Doc's homeworld (with the obvious exception of granddaughter Susan), and even this aside, its an entertaining romp to boot - with Peter Purves putting in a great performance as astronaught Steven Taylor, in his first full story.

"The Gunfighters", four episodes from season 3, is a purely historical story with overtly comical overtones. The Doctor and Steven, now accompanied by sometimes-cockney lass Dorothea "Dodo" Chaplet, land in the Wild Wild West at around the time of the gunfight at the OK Corral. The Doc is looking for a dentist after sustaining toothache from a hard candy he bit into, and finds himself getting mistaken for the famous Doc Holiday, with Steven and Dodo being forced to perform at the Last Chance saloon. This story is generally regarded as pretty poor, though it is in actual fact a thoroughly entertaining run around that really demonstrates the true versatility of Hartnell's tenure as the Doctor.

All in all this box set provides a nice selection of classic Who tales, and if you like these adventures, bear in mind - as good as they are, they are by no means the best lot from the incredibly high quality first 3 seasons of Who.
