5.0 out of 5 stars Gothic-tastic!, 20 April 2009
By Binro The Heretic "mattieboyz" (Hillsborough, Sheffield) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Much has been made of this Fourth Doctor and Leela story from 1977 being the last of the so-called 'Gothic serials' that were helmed by Graham Williams. Along with 'The Horror of Fang Rock', the peerless 'Talons of Weng-Chiang' and one or two others it forms a group of stories that suffered from budgetary constraints but were consequently more imaginitive and memorable than much that had gone before and indeed, came after.
It seems churlish to carp about Fendahls' rubbery monsters and bonkers makeup - isn't that what classic Doctor Who is all about - and the story is an intriguing one, its central premise being rooted in the supernatural and the sublime; archetypal Gothic ingredients.
As well as strong performances from Tom Baker and Louise Jameson (the former in his prime as the nomadic Time Lord) there are some superb turns from the supporting cast, notably the gorgeous Wanda Ventham as the possessed scientist and Geoff Hinsliff as the wide-eyed yokel caught up in a series of nightmarish events.
All in all this is better than many fans would have you believe and rightly deserves its five stars. Newly released on DVD it's worth going for that over this VHS version as there are some good extras and a better overall quality of picture.

3.0 out of 5 stars Image of the Fendahl....Go Tom-Baby Go!, 10 May 2004
This is one of Tom Baker's best ones from 1977. The Dr lands on Earth to battle some alien intelligence and eventually stops the power source. This is an exciting 4 part-er, well worth the price if you are a big Tom Baker fan.
