Product Description

Third Doctor Jon Pertwee's Sonic Screwdriver! The versatile tool and defensive device features lights, sounds, and spinning action! Exclusive release based on the Doctor Who TV series. Put the Third Doctor Sonic Screwdriver to use in your time travels! This exclusive release brings an electronic version of Third Doctor Jon Pertwee's Sonic Screwdriver, complete with lights, 2 sounds, spring-loaded sound activation, and spinning action! The versatile tool and defensive device is based on the Doctor Who TV series. How will you put the Third Doctor Sonic Screwdriver to use in your time travels? Measures about 8-inches long. The Sonic Screwdriver is a versatile tool and defensive device first used by The Doctor in his second incarnation for opening up hatches, panels, and controls. Later uses included cutting through wall sections and even as a conventional screwdriver. During the Third Doctor's exile on Earth, he had a larger and more elaborately detailed version that had a decorated silver handle and black-and-yellow stripes. This version featured even more functions, including detecting security traps, remote detonation of mines, opening doors and restraints, creating ignition sparks, and again, removing screws and fixings.

Classic Sonic-ness 13 Oct 2010
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Ooooh, the packaging. *mourns*
It was so painful to take apart the beautiful packaging.
Still! It's the product we're here to review, right?
Well~. The packaging says 5+ but I doubt there's a kid out there who's watched enough classic Who or cares enough to want it. It seems a bit silly, therefore, that the Screwdriver (whilst still being a great likeness) has been made a bit childproof (in that the bullet-shape in the head of the Sonic Screwdriver is much nubbier than I remember the prop being). It does, however, explain how easy-to-break the head of the screwdriver is. It is really flimsy and a sharp impact or carefree child could easily and accidentally snap it off (the instruction sheet also warns you to be careful of snapping it this way). The paint is easily scratched, too.
The two (yeah, there's only two) soundeffects the Sonic Screwdriver emits are the same ones made by the Eccleston/Tennant model, which I can't say I've heard this version making (although I've heard Baker's screwdriver make the noise, so I suppose it works). I was a little disappointed that it didn't make that old "Blip-a-ba-boop" noise but it's still fun to use.

So all-in-all, a fun little replica of the second model of Sonic Screwdriver~. Could have been better, but it's good as it is.

Ok, simply put this is an example of pure laziness on behalf of the manufacturers.

Anyone who is a fan of the classic series will be familiar with this Dr Who prop, it's as iconic as the Tardis itself and featured in multiple stories over the years.

So why the hell couldn't they be bothered to get the sound effect right?

I actually like the look and feel of this prop toy but any joy I felt quickly disappeared when I pushed down and activated the sound chip.

AAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!

All they've done is take the sound chip from the Eccleston/Tennant screwdriver and bunged it into this one - I can almost see them doing it now whilst simultaneously saying "Ah, that'll do, no one will notice"

Well this Dr Who fan did notice. It's unforgivable in my view to offer this for sale - especially at the price they are charging for it.

It's like saying "Hey folks, we've just created this amazing Talking Tom Baker figure" and then when you pull the cord it's David Tennants voice that bleats out.

Not happy :-(

Sonic Screwdriver 14 Mar 2011
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
The Sonic is an absolutely amazing toy. When I found out about it last year I was going to get it near my birthday or for my birthday but I decided to leave it a bit later. The only disappointing thing is the sounds. The sounds are the new series sounds, not the classic sounds. The sounds are the buzzing effect and the warbly effect that have been use by Chistopher Eccleston and David Tennant but not Matt Smith or Doctors 2,3,4,5,7 and 8. All in all a brilliant toy.
