another audio adventure for the fifth doctor who, with his companions peri and erimem [the latter having been created especially for the audio range]. A story told in four twenty five minute long episodes takes them to medieval eastern europe, at a time of great war and strife. Vlad the impaler, the man also known as dracula and inspiration for much vampire legend, is fighting for his kingdom. And as usually happens in this situation, the doctor and his friends get caught up in the middle.
This is purely historical story with no science fiction or alien elements, and it's a very quality drama. It considers many moral issues of duty and leadership, and the play is dominated by a superb performance from james purefoy as vlad, presenting as a leader who has a decent heart but will never compromise. Peter Davison's doctor suits this story well, with a superbly detached attitude to the goings on, and his two companions get their moments to shine. Some humorous moments from peri via her reaction to things work well.
This is quality drama, the best big finish release of the year, and well worth getting.
And the usual extras at the end of each discs have something more than interviews for once, as they give us a couple of deleted scenes. which are quite interesting
