Underated!, 26 Jun 2003
This review is from: Doctor Who: Domino Effect (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed The Domino Effect. It has a quick moving and sharp plot, some horrible characters to hiss at, simple, readable prose and a gripping climax. The Doctor, Fitz and Anji are trapped in an alternative reality governed by a sadistic matriarch. They are literally on the run for their lives and this makes much of the book exciting and in places gripping. Concentrating on his characters David Bishop knows how to make you hate his bad guys. The sinister Hastings is a real piece of work, his abuse of Fitz is quite horrible to read. If you are careful you can spot some of the Doctors old friends from "his" reality cropping up in this one. Yes it is another arc story but it is quite a quick read and contains enough action and suspense to see you through.

A pleasing pot-boiler., 8 Dec 2008
This review is from: Doctor Who: Domino Effect (Paperback)
Another day, another parallel universe - sometimes it just seems too easy to hide a plot in a paradox.
On the whole, it was a good page-turner and not over-stuffed with nonsenses (something you can't say for every EDA). It's brutal, for sure, as much as any Doctor Who book I've read. The casual cruelty, the disregard for life and justice, the complete absence of compassion are all too real and happening in too many places in our own time, on our own planet, but it makes for an often uncomfortable read and the cliff-hanger ending would have been a nuisance if I didn't already have the next book ready to read.
So, a pleasing pot-boiler; not one of the best, certainly not one of the worst. Heavily centred in the plot rather than the characters and subsequently, an easy read, but be prepared for the casual horror which I found overwhelming at times.

One for the diehards EDA followers only..., 9 April 2003
This review is from: Doctor Who: Domino Effect (Paperback)
The Domino Effect is a pulpy, but failry enjoyable read. The alternative Earth, with its fachist England setting, will be familiar to most readers, and the fact that we all know that the inhabitants of this alternate history will be 'wiped out' by the novels end means its difficult to care anbout any of them. Theres a great ending though for those of us who've been following the series 'Sabbath' storyline - just be warned that with its unresolved cliffhanger ending and reliance on recent EDA continuity this is really only for diehard, rather than casual readers...
