The opening paragraph is more Mary Shelley than Terrance Dicks.

This may be, now released as part of BBC AUDIO's ever-presented, reliably professional range of unabridged releases, due in part to the combination of William Russell's reading and a deft array of sound treatments (punctuated incidental music, atmospheric sound effects and voice - supplied by NEW SERIES voice artist, Nicholas Briggs - treatments that raise the dalek invasion threat to a level of locust biblical proportion). Terry Nation would be proud.

In particular, the rebels attack on the dalek interplanetary ship (docked at Chelsea Heliport) - disc 2 track 09 - is superbly realised, drawing together the production team's expertise with an exquisite terror that all listeners (whether of the NEW SERIES or the CLASSIC SERIES) will appreciate.

William Russell's reading is reassuringly familiar like the Werther's confectionary TV advertisement; the secure presence of your granddad reading that DOCTOR WHO bedtime story that you know so well night after night after night. Unlike David Tennant's readings, Russell does not wholeheartedly attempt to deliver overtly delineated characterisations but, instead, subtly & creativity is employed. However, his presentation of the First Doctor is carefully observed and is as chameleon as Hartnell was on television; authoritarian, brusque with his associates yet gentle. The fact that over forty years on he is still casting his magic within the DOCTOR WHO universe is remarkable, and one that should be cherish - and re-celebrated in the NEW SERIES (Plot: The Eleventh Doctor having a scientific equation that would save an entire civilisation to solve drops in to see a schoolteacher he once knew).

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent starter pack 8 Oct 2012
By Mr. D. K. Smith TOP 100 REVIEWER

For anybody looking to pick up some of the releases in the ever-increasing Doctor Who Classic Novels audios, this is a good place to start.

The Dalek Invasion of Earth is a William Hartnell story, read by the wonderful William Russell and featuring Dalek voices by Nicholas Briggs. Anything read by William Russell is worthwhile, and The Dalek Invasion of Earth is no exception.

The Dinosaur Invasion is a Jon Pertwee story, read by Martin Jarvis. Jarvis' skill as an audiobook reader is well known, so again this is another quality audiobook.

The Auton Invasion was Jon Pertwee's debut, transmitted on TV as Spearhead from Space. It's another very good book, but unfortunately the reading, by the late Caroline John, is the weak link. Caroline John had a fine reading voice, but her character voices sometimes verged on the caricature. This does make listening to this audiobook a little bit of a trial, but it's worth sticking with as it is a good story.

All in all, a good collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars My friend loved it! 22 April 2013

I gave this to a friend who is legally blind but enjoys the Dr. Who shows. It was a Christmas gift and is being enjoyed while my friend sits in dialysis for three to four hours three times a week. My friend said it is a very pleasant way to spend time in the hospital since TV though available is not able to be enjoyed due to blindness.
