I came across one of this series and enjoyed it so much, I researched the back list and started in from the beginning. This is the best so far.
Our strange hero, Hermes Diaktoros, known only as 'an investigator from Athens', descends on out-of-the-way Greek villages apparently by chance. However, always coincidentally, there is always a mystery to be unravelled. On this occasion, a local doctor is cruelly blinded on the night before his marriage to the younger of two spinster sisters.
The village is untouched by the tourist industry, its simple village people still live by the morals, manners and ethics predominent in Greece since time immemorial - yet one can sense the corruption and nepotism in the air that is apparent in the modern day Greek world.
The dusty streets and simmering passions are brought to life and we become immersed in the story and our unlikely 'detective'in his elegant suit and the white tennis shoes. We never really discover where he comes from and how he achieves his own unorthodox justice.
I recommend this almost 'cosy' detective story, one that all sexes will enjoy. Start with the first one,
The Messenger of Athens (Mysteries of/Greek Detective 1) But this book, The Doctor of Thessaly and, as I say, for me and my husband, it is the best so far. And it does stand alone and won't spoil the rest if you read it first..
