Review

PRAISE FOR THE TAINT OF MIDAS: 'More transported Agatha Christie here, this time to a Greek island setting with modern land-grabbing by unscrupulous developers ... It's good news for readers that there are five more sins to go, because Diaktoros is a delight. Half Poirot, half deus ex machina ... a cracking plot, colourful local characters and descriptions of the hot, dry countryside so strong that you can almost see the heat haze and hear the cicadas - the perfect read to curl up with as the nights draw in' Guardian PRAISE FOR THE MESSENGER OF ATHENS: 'This powerfully atmospheric mystery embraces Mediterranean passion, mythic meddling and patriarchal persecution. First-time novelist Anne Zouroudi proves a natural at the dark arts of writing Euro-crime' Independent 'This is a fantastic tale of passion, corruption and murder on a remote Greek island' Woman's Own 'Absorbing and beautifully written and reveals the savage, superstitious reality behind the pretty facade that is all that most of us know of any Greek island' Literary Review

ENVY, REVENGE AND RETRIBUTION IN THE THRILLING NEW INSTALMENT OF THE MYSTERIES OF THE GREEK DETECTIVE SERIES My first question must be, why do you want no investigation? If some malicious person has robbed you - as you believe - of your precious sight, why do you not want that person caught, tried and punished for their crime? A jilted bride weeps on an empty beach, a local doctor is attacked in an isolated churchyard - trouble has come at a bad time to Morfi, just as the backwater village is making headlines with a visit from a government minister. Fortunately, where there's trouble there's Hermes Diaktoros, the mysterious fat man whose tennis shoes are always pristine and whose methods are always unorthodox. Hermes must solve a brutal crime, thwart the petty machinations of the town's ex-mayor and pour oil on the troubled waters of a sisters' relationship - but how can he solve a mystery that not even the victim wants to be solved?...

I came across one of this series and enjoyed it so much, I researched the back list and started in from the beginning. This is the best so far.

Our strange hero, Hermes Diaktoros, known only as 'an investigator from Athens', descends on out-of-the-way Greek villages apparently by chance. However, always coincidentally, there is always a mystery to be unravelled. On this occasion, a local doctor is cruelly blinded on the night before his marriage to the younger of two spinster sisters.

The village is untouched by the tourist industry, its simple village people still live by the morals, manners and ethics predominent in Greece since time immemorial - yet one can sense the corruption and nepotism in the air that is apparent in the modern day Greek world.

The dusty streets and simmering passions are brought to life and we become immersed in the story and our unlikely 'detective'in his elegant suit and the white tennis shoes. We never really discover where he comes from and how he achieves his own unorthodox justice.

I recommend this almost 'cosy' detective story, one that all sexes will enjoy. Start with the first one, The Messenger of Athens (Mysteries of/Greek Detective 1) But this book, The Doctor of Thessaly and, as I say, for me and my husband, it is the best so far. And it does stand alone and won't spoil the rest if you read it first..

I really like Anne Zouroudi books, her fat man dective "Hermes" is a very clever person , and knows a lot and knows the right people. He fasanites me, I feel he may be some kind of Greek demi god as he sees things others don't. This is never mentioned but I don't know how he does the things he does other wise. The storys are different from the normal run of the mill dective story and are all set in Greece. The culture of Greece and her people really comes through. I am a huge fan of this book. The story has a ending where you know the real perpretrator gets their comeupance.
