Book Description

13 Mar 2009
Posing as a respectable vicar in Dymchurch at the turn of the 18th century, Dr. Syn is actually the retired pirate Captain Clegg. Clegg, believed hanged in Rye, is no longer being sought by the authorities. However, country life proves too tame for the good "Dr. Syn," and his attention turns to smuggling. He takes on a secret identity, "The Scarecrow," and leads a gang of smugglers known as the Marsh Men. They travel Romney Marsh by night on horseback, sometimes using mounts painted with phosphorus to give them a spectral appearance, spreading legends of supernatural evil and menace. Although a criminal, Syn's appeal is almost Robin Hood-like. He uses his ill-gotten gains to help his parish, and the King's Men sent to ferret out him and his men are hardly a sympathetic lot, even though they represent the forces of law. It's little wonder that Doctor Syn proved a hit among readers of its day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doctor Syn 8 April 2010
Format:Paperback
All of the 'Doctor Syn' books are excellant reading and I can recommend them to anyone who enjoys a good old fashioned yarn. The writing style of Mr. Thorndyke is very easy on the eyes and brain and it is quite easy to become lost in one of his books in one sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent yarn 8 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Remember reading these tales when I was at school and they have not lost any of their pace. The book cover caught the attention of my grandchildren and got them from their Wii. They thoroughly enjoyed reading the story as the knew of Dr. Syn from repeats on BBC 7. Would recommend for getting boys interested as the format is not novel like and the print easy to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dr Syn 17 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Although this is the first book that Russell Thorndyke wrote in his Dr Syn series, it ultimately starts at the end of the Dr Syn story
but because so many people enjoyed it back in 1915, he then wrote 6 'prequels' (of which I have only read the first one, Dr Syn on the High Seas).
I therefore recommend that any other reader who wants to embark of this series of books does so in chronological order, so that they can build a better picture of the main character and subsequent characters that he encounters along the way.
This will make this final book in the story much more enjoyable.

Things I didn't like about this book:
Were some of the spelling mistakes not picked up at the proof reading stage and the author's use of the word 'ejaculated' everytime someone says something with gusto! (Page 155 being a classic example)

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting tale 8 Sep 2013
By Pat T
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
An interesting tale which starts slowly and goes on to develop some interesting twists. Quite melodramatic, but real flavour of the way people were and the lives they lived in that period.
