First of all, I should indicate that I'm reviewing the Corgi edition of the book, which was published shortly after Stanley Kubrick's film was made and, although still written by Peter George, the book is based on the screenplay for the movie rather than George's "Two Hours To Doom", a more serious novel that provided a starting point for the film.
An advantage over the film here is that there's a bit of material that was originally in the screenplay, but was edited out and never appeared in the final cut. However, although the book is still funny (but omits some of THOSE lines that can only be associated with the film), the talents of Peter Sellers, Sterling Hayden et al just can't be recaptured on paper, as the cast of the movie gave such brilliant performances.
In the end though, if you want an easy-to-read, short novel that can put a smile on your face, look no further.
