Reviews

Entire second series of the pedigreed sixties and seventies sitcom scripted by John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie, which spawned six film versions. The series centres on the exploits of hapless medical student Michael Upton (Barry Evans), a sober and somewhat studious lad following in his father's footsteps into the medical profession. The fun focuses on he and his fellow students' capers around campus and ward - they are customarily less studious than Upton. The famous surgeon Prof Loftus (Ernest Clark) is the primary antagonist but the bigheaded Dr Bingham (Richard O' Sullivan) is equally irritating. Episodes are: 'It's All in the Little Blue Book', 'What Seems to Be the Trouble?', 'Take Off Your Clothes... and Hide', 'Nice Bodywork - Lovely Finish', 'Look into My Eyes', 'Put Your Hand on That', 'The Royal Visit', 'If You Can Help Somebody... Don't!', 'Hot Off the Presses', 'A Stitch in Time', 'May The Best Man ...', 'Doctor on the Box' and 'Finals'.

I welcome this second helping of Doctor In The House as this series continues the trend set in the previous season. This time the madcap Students are set loose upon the wards creating more medical mayhem for both staff and patients culminating in their final exams as Doctors.
This time Series 2 was written entirely by Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie, the dynamic duo from THE GOODIES !

Series 2 (10th April 1970 - 3rd July 1970)
Episodes are as follows;
1 - Its All In The Little Blue Book
2 - What Seems To Be The Trouble ?
3 - Take Off Your Clothes...And Hide
4 - Nice Bodywork - Lovely Finish
5 - Look Into My Eyes
6 - Put Your Hand On That
7 - The Royal Visit
8 - If you Can Help Somebody...Don't !
9 - Hot Off The Press
10- A Stitch In Time
11- May The Best Man...
12- Doctor On The Box
13- Finals

The same cast led by Barry Evans, Robin Nedwell, Ernest Clark, Goeffrey Davies, George Layton and Simon Cuff are all still here but by now Martin Shaw had abandoned his Huw Evans character only to be replaced by a somewhat irritating new character in the shape of Danny Hooley played by future writer Jonathan Lynn.
There are several notable guest stars worth mentioning here such as Graeme Garden making a suprise welcome appearance in the episode Doctor On The Box as a Television reporter; as well as James Beck (Joe Walker from Dads Army), David Jason (A Touch Of Frost), Sally Douglas (Carry On Jack/Spying/Cleo/Cowboy/Screaming/Camel) just to mention afew.
After only 2 series, and what should in actual fact be several more years in training, writers were ready to prematurally cut loose newly trained and not so experienced Doctors onto an unsuspecting public.

I really enjoyed Doctor in the House and I think it was a good idea to progress the characters through their careers rather than leaving them stagnate in the same position for many years. I would highly recommend this series.
