This is one of the readings of the "classic" novelisations of a Doctor Who story - in this case, the Third Doctor story of the Invasion of the Dinosaurs. The Doctor is accompanied by Sarah Jane Smith, in her second story after The Time Warrior, from 1974. They arrive back in London - but it is a London which seems to be deserted. Why? And what's going on? That's for the Doctor and his intrepid journalist companion to find out.
This is a great story - it has the Third Doctor, Sarah Jane, UNIT (including the Brigadier, Benton and Yates), and a great assortment of misfits and mischief-makers. This version is brilliantly read (as always) by Martin Jarvis, who played the nasty Butler in the original 1974 tv story. His readings of all the various characters is brilliantly done. We even get to have the preliminary adventure of Shughie McPherson, the hapless Glaswegian who finds himself stuck in evacuated London, and finds out to his cost why that is.
The story races along at a great pace - with dinosaurs, villains, cunning plots, kidnappings and various red herrings along the way. The Doctor has all his gadgets and gets to ride around London on a motorbike, in a truck, army jeeps and the like - Jon Pertwee's Doctor was always keen on the gadgets and they seem to be incorporated in as many of his stories as humanly (or TimeLordly?) possible.
This is great stuff - a great story, great characters, and great reading of a great novelisation by Martin Jarvis. Totally recommended.
