Product Description

Product Description

Introducing the ICY DOCK MB882SP-1S-2B: another milestone in our 2.5 inch SSD product line. Through manufacturing efficiency, we have managed to redesign the original MB882SP-1S-1B without any sacrifice to our standard of high quality products. The new version is lighter weight for simplicity and cost efficiency. It is very convenient for gamers and power users who expect SSD speed on their home/ office computers. Some other new elements to the converter are viewing slots placed over the SATA connection, allowing the user to verify their HDD or SSD has made a secure connection. This also functions as an extra set of airflow vents for extra cooling with your SSD or HDD. Overall, a lightweight and simplistic design that is perfect for power users, gamers, and average computer users for use in their desktops, media centers, and home servers.

Excellent buy 26 Jun 2011
I have an Antec P182 case and have struggled to find a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch converter that will fit into it because it has non-standard mounts. The MB882SP-1S-2B fits the P182 perfectly, because it has exactly the same dimensions as a hard drive and has screw holes in the standard locations. I had bought a cheaper Icy Dock converter (the MB990SP-B Dual) but this was a huge disappointment as it would not fit into my case. The spring loading was not sufficient for a screwless fit, it has no screws underneath the bracket so would not fit into the upper drive cage and the screwholes were in the wrong place for the lower drive cage. There seems to be much confusion surrounding these converters as they all claim to fit most cases but don't list those that they don't.

The SSD that I was installing was a doddle to install - it slots neatly inside the converter, with the power and SATA cables fitting directly onto the converter, not the SSD itself.

Only gripe is that the screws supplied with it were too short to fit through the case's rubber grommets, so I had to improvise with some slightly longer ones. It's a bit more expensive than most, but you can almost guarantee that it will fit your case. Iwould have been even more impressed if it was as cheap when I bought it as it is now!!

This product was quite expensive when I ended up paying £12 for this, plus £5 postage. However for the price, it delivers completely!

As the manufacturer and other reviewers state, the dimensions of the dock are exactly those of your average 3.5 inch hard drive. My case has a strange caddy system which infuriates me no end but at least holds the drives in place, and this one offered no extra challenge. If your case can hold 3.5 inch drives, it can hold this.

You connect the 2.5 SSD or hard drive to a little converter INSIDE the dock, and there are ports attached to the OUTSIDE of the dock. I prefer this to having a direct connection between SATA/power cables and the drive as I'm worried about damaging my SSD. Not sure how realistic the risk is, I think I'm just paranoid!

Pads are provided to help fit the 2.5 SSD/HDD snugly inside the case. No problems arose from that bit, though the locking mechanism put me off a little - before I realised that the backing of the enclosure held the tab which in turn held the drive in place. I think this could've been done better (quick lock/quick remove metal pins to hold it in place perhaps), but admittedly the holes aren't always in the same places on the drive, whereas this solution works for most drives.

There are cooling holes, so hot air will be able to vent, and it doesn't look like this case, being made of hardened plastic, will melt in action any time soon.

Overall, it's flexible and I imagine will work for most 2.5 inch SSDs and HDDs (I use the Crucial CT064M4SSD2 64GB M4 SSD with success) and on inspection it should fit virtually any 3.5 drive bay, and is hot-swappable with other cases. Four stars for this one, I think £12 was a little too much, but otherwise a fantastic product!
