Book Description

Aug 2011
Shoot yourself. It includes sexy self-portraits by everyday women. Inspired by a babysitter he surprised in front of the bathroom mirror shooting pictures of herself with his Polaroid, photographer Uwe Ommer decided to put together a book of erotic self-portraits by inexperienced photographers. Arming participants with cameras and basic technical instructions, Ommer asked them to photograph themselves in any way they pleased - liberated, so to speak, from the voyeuristic eye of the photographer. Some chose to use mirrors as they captured their portraits, while others braved the camera without the help of their reflections. While many subjects required no intervention by Ommer, for others he acted as "ghost photographer," helping them with the lighting and setup; in both cases, the models were free to indulge their inspirations in any ways they pleased - from sexy and provocative to romantic to simply being themselves. The cast of self-portraitists includes a wide range of personalities, from students to artists, actors, stylists, dancers, models, musicians, teachers, and more. This highly original book gives us a rare glimpse at the way everyday women see themselves - or wish they did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now to give this book the review it deserves. 25 Jun 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I am a little shocked to see this book has one star at the top of the page. I feel this is based on one negative review and therefore i wish to offer a different perspective.
The book is superbly presented, and is not to be classed with other Taschen works of photographs taken by professionals. It does what is says on the tin so to speak. It is a collection of great pics done by the girls themselves , and is all the better for that. The quality is superb and the binding top notch. Every picture is interesting and as a collector of erotic photography books, the best ones are the ones that carry with them the personalities and authenticity of the girls themselves. This is certainly in that category , and i have no hesitation in recommending it to others who collect these works.
To have a balance of works by professionals and amateurs is the best way forward for this type of publication, and i would love to see the publisher create more volumes of this type. Once again highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy Self-Portraits by Everyday Women 16 Dec 2008
Format:Hardcover
The subtitle of this book from German legend, Uwe Ommer is, Sexy Self-Portraits by Everyday Women. The "everyday" women include an array of students, models, dancers, artists, actors, teachers, and so forth. They are for the most part a very photogenic and attractive bunch. Some are breathtakingly beautiful. So, if the casual viewer is expecting a book of average, ordinary, girl-next-door types he might be let down. But only for a moment, for this is a thrilling collection of nudes. Each shot is a self-portrait. Admittedly, Ommer assisted in helping create the final product by providing the camera and occasionally lending some technical assistance. But each subject composed a picture that represented the sexy siren that dwells within her. Sometimes the result are brilliant. And there is an indefinable quality to many of the shots here that make this one of most engaging and inspiring book of nudes published in recent times. Perhaps some of the magic rubbed off from Mr. Ommer himself. His recent book, 1000 Families, published in 2002 by Taschen jettisoned Ommer to the thresholds of genius.

Do it Yourself is 256 pages of sheer magic that everyone will love. The only flaw is that this book is not twice the size of its final production. 500 pages would not have been enough. One can only dream of the beauty edited from the final selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Photos! 30 Oct 2013
By JD73
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Unsure of what to expect from the book but was pleasantly surprised with it.

Mixed of girls of all colours and in a mix of black and white and colour pictures (personally, I would have preferred all the pictures to be in colour, but understand and respect why they are not); ranging from a few with some clothes on to full nudity. Covered in foam and paint; trapped in nets; skipping; lounging provocatively and seductively; lifting weights....

If there is one thing I would have liked to have seen is that some information about each girl be included with her photos, but, maybe such information was not included because it could have lead to people stalking them.

Uwe Ommer gets pretty young women to take self-portraits while naked or nearly so. Provocative photos emerge yet all tastefully done. An essential coffee table book for the bachelor pad

...interesting concept - nice to see how some girls can express themselves more freely without a photographer being present
