Book Description

Do It Yourself Bonefishing is the authoritative guide written for DIY anglers targeting bonefish on the fly. Divided into easy-to-reference sections, this book will help you tackle the why, where, and how of self-guided bonefishing. Informed by twenty years of experience on the flats, Rod Hamilton and Kirk Deeter describe the allure of matching wits with one of fly fishing’s most elusive targets and discuss the reasons why more and more fly fishermen are seeking the challenge of catching bonefish without the aid of a guide. Do It Yourself Bonefishing is packed with useful tips to help all levels of fly fishermen locate and catch more of one of the world’s premier gamefish. Learn stalking strategies, how to spot bonefish, appropriate fly selection, and where to find the fish.

As you plan your bonefishing trip, the authors’ destination chapters and “Seven-Day Sample Trip” itineraries suggest where to fish, how to get there, and places to stay. Included is a list of more than 300 individual bonefish hotspots located throughout the tropics, complete with maps and tips specific to the flat or creek system. Within the “Spousal Rating” section are Hamilton’s opinions on how suitable the destination is for nonfishers; the “Nonfishing Activities” section highlights things to do when not fishing. Whether you need help deciding where to go or simply desire greater success while wading on your own,
Do It Yourself Bonefishing is where you should start.

This book will appeal to both the experienced and novices to the sport as there is a wealth of information and tips on tackle, tactics and methods, and it is an excellent book for a 'do it yourself' Bone fishing enthusiast. Lots of useful information on places to fish and how to get to the flats. Ideal for planning a holiday, even has a 'spousal rating' so you can see how other members of the family would enjoy the location if you slide off for a spot of fishing! It is a very good reference for places to fish and the likely quality and accessibility of the fishing and what species that you can expect to catch. Excellent information on places to stay, guides, car hire etc. In summary a great guide and would be a great reference book when you are on holiday.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to DIY and Destinations 4 Jan. 2014
By Bronx Fly Angler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I started to DIY when forced to wade fish on my own while staying at a full-service lodges when weather prevented the Guides from running the skiffs for safety reasons. Compounding the lousy weather, was the economics of having paid the Lodge for a day of Guided fishing without a credit or refund. Although I paid for a day of Guiding not once did the Guide spend the day with me tying flies or playing cards, much less driving me to wading locations or duty free shopping. I also didn't like fishing on a clock and enjoyed the intimacy of wading.

Do It Yourself Bonefishing is in two parts: I - DIY and II - Destinations. Part I covers things such as why DIY, which I described above. For an experienced Bonefish Angler, it is a wade fishing focused refresher course on how to fly fish for Bonefish. Part II is a detailed destination guide primarily focused on the Bahamas and recommends a kayak where necessary. The locales that I know well, most of the identifiable and named or mapped locations are mentioned with honest expectation setting. For each Destination Seven-Day Sample Trips are provided, which include Independent Guided days that I still consider DIY fishing. There is also a Spousal Rating, assuming your Spouse does not fly fish.

At less than half the price of a fly line or a dozen flies, it is certainly a worthwhile purchase to have information you might have to compile from multiple sources, fishing books, internet (Hamilton's DIY Website) and guidebooks at your fingertips. A very experienced Bonefisherman, however may find the book lacking "graduate course level" content.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read if you are thinking or even dreaming about bonefishing on your own! 29 Dec. 2013
By R. Swan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
If you are thinking about giving bonefishing a try on your own this is the book for you. The author brings 20 years of experience (hundreds of days) to the subject in this instructive and well organized book. Just under a third of the book explores the obstacles involved in the do-it-yourself approach and how to deal with those obstacles. DIY usually means walking the flats "hunting" for fish. In this section the author covers the very important subjects of how to "see the fish", how to cast in windy conditions, how to manage fly line and how to "stalk" fish on the flats. It also gives valuable info on tides and feeding habits as well as the author's thoughts on gear best suited to the DIY angler.

The second part of the book gives extensive "where to fish" information and covers the storied bonefish haunts. The Bahamas, Mexico, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, as well as the Florida Keys are featured with specific directions and maps. Did you know there are bonefish off the beaches of Honolulu? There is a surprise section on Oahu, Hawaii. To my knowledge this is the only book available that tells you where and how to get to spots where you can bonefish on your own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Detailed Information 22 May 2014
By R. A. heim - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wish I would have had this book years ago.....I've fished many of the places Rod very thoroughly goes over in his book and am sure I would have caught more Bones and cut way down on the learning curve had I have had Do It Yourself Bonefishing in my bag.. Rod goes into great detail not only on where, when, and how to fish the various Islands and locations but also tells where to stay and the pros and cons of various aspects and attractions that can only be learned by spending a lot of time there. This book is a must for anyone that travels for either hard core Bonefishing or with a nonfishing partner as it rates the " spouse friendliness " of each destination. I originally purchased the book in hard copy, but after my fishing buddies kept borrowing it and I wouldn't have it to refer to, I also got it for my Kindle. The book is both informational and well written and I recommend it highly. Rick heim

This book and Chico's book helped my catch many bones on my first trip to bonefish flats. This book gave me bare essentials to what mattered in bone fish fishing and Chico's elaborated it. I recommend having both books if you have never bone fished. Maybe just this one if your already experienced with bone fishing. There are so many little subtle things you need to see and feel when fishing to be successful. You just can't get lucky with bonefish. You really need some knowledge to find them..see them... hook them and even fighting them entails special knowledge. I highly recommend this book as a bare minimum
