Product Description

Product Description

Sofie Koborg Brosen is eleven years old and, like other children of her age, goes to a mainstream school, loves reading comics and being with her family and her cat, Teddy. But Sofie is not the same as everyone else - she has autism spectrum disorder. Fed up of being misunderstood by her classmates, she has written a book about her world so others can learn to understand her, and vice versa. Sofie describes her day-to-day life in clear, unambiguous language and tells readers about things she finds difficult: being given too many instructions, disruptions to her routine, being teased, strong lights and smells and too much noise. She also tells about what she really likes - feeling accepted by other children, reading, nature, her autism camp and her cat. This fully illustrated book has already attracted much positive attention in Denmark. It is a readable insider's view of life as a child with autism attending a mainstream school and will be an invaluable resource in helping other children to understand their classmates with autism spectrum disorders. Teachers, parents, carers, support workers, children with autism spectrum disorders and their classmates will find this an entertaining, informative and attitude-changing read.

5.0 out of 5 stars What we all need to know, 7 Sep 2006
By Mrs. N. Brown "nb" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Sofie's book is inspirational she gives us her view on what she likes, loves and hates and her understanding of thngs. This alone is very hard for a child on the Autistic spectrum. The book enables us as parents and professionals and more importantly it helps others to re-evaluate their attitudes and language to enhance the progress of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. As for my son who has Aspergers, found the book entertaining and very easy to understand and recognised the comparisons between his and Sofie life.It gave him a sense of not being alone. Overall this book is an education tool to use in schools so other children can experience the world of a child on the Autistic Spectrum like Sofie and many others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun To Read!!, 1 Jul 2009
I found this book so amusing because some of the pictures can apply to me. - such as difficulty to catch subtlety or jokes, non-verbal communications, multi-tasking, and hatred to groupism. Therefore, I would like to recommend not only Auties and Aspies but also parents of autistic/Asperger kids and those dealing with them to read this. Sofie Koborg Brosen tried very hard to show us super specific points of autism/Asperger's(a/A) according to her experiences, which I found very real. If you ask me, though this book is informative, no complicated sentence exists. I hope her realistic approach to a/A will eventually appeal to the public. So don't put this book down just because the author is a girl!

Also I would like you to read Jude Welton's book, Can I Tell You About My Asperger Syndrome?, if possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well constructed book, 16 Feb 2009
By Lizzie (Herts, UK) - See all my reviews
Bought this and gave it to my daughter after I had read it. We both enjoyed this book. It is especially relevant as girls with autism are often diagnosed later than their male counterparts, and are left to wade through life without many points of reference or understanding of their situation.
