Product Description

Product Description

* Three husband and wife songwriting teams ruled the airwaves of the Kennedy era: Gerry Goffin & Carole King, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil and Ellie Greenwich & Jeff Barry.

* Ace paid tribute to Goffin & King in 2007 with a big selling collection of their compositions, and a compendium of songs by Mann & Weil is scheduled for later this year, but first it's the turn of top Brill Building hitmakers Greenwich & Barry.

* Although they wrote together for just three or four years, you'd need a box set to contain all the hit songs of Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry. Until such a pipedream becomes a reality, this single disc compilation of hits, rarities and other gems can't be beaten as a representation of their work.

* The collection contains famous tracks by the Shangri-Las, the Jelly Beans, the Dixie Cups, the Butterflys, Lesley Gore, the Chiffons, the Drifters and the Beach Boys; the first released versions of `Do-Wah-Diddy' and `Hanky Panky' (from before the Manfreds and Tommy James got their hands on the songs); plus new-to-CD collectables from the Darlettes, Karen Verros, the Fleetwoods, the Majors and Tony Pass. And that's just for starters...

5.0 out of 5 stars What you might expect 5 Oct 2008
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
As part of Ace's songwriter series its now the turn of Barry & Greenwich whose songs never go out of fashion.
Its the usual mix of the big ones and the failures with a first time round for the first record on the market of Hanky Panky-no doubt the model for the Shondells' hit. This version is by an unknown girl group called the Summits and its a song which goes back to 1963 and the original version by the Raindrops which only appeared later as a B side

4.0 out of 5 stars "That Thing You Do!" soundtrack 17 Sep 2000
Format:Audio CD
After seeing the film "That Thing You Do!", I simply had to buy the soundtrack. Anyone who has seen it will recall the infectiously catchy title track. However, every song on the album is equally as captivating and as easy to sing along to. Comparisons can be made between The Beatles and the artists on the CD, particularly track 7 "She Knows It" (if anyone can tell me which Beatles' track this is similar to, could you let me know because I've got a mental block on it!). This is a great CD to buy and I'd definitely recommend it to any of the following: fans of the film, fans of The Beatles, those who spend their days wishing it was still the 60s!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it Love it Love it!!!! 24 Sep 2013
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
Absolutely brilliant!! Fantastic music & songs, great costumes & a spot-on portrayal of the 60's music scene. A must -watch- film for any 60's era fans. & not a single swear word, sex scene, or violent act anywhere - what a breath of fresh air & also very funny. Tom Hanks is great, as usual. You must watch this - it's a feel-good film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff. 25 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne had a hand in this soundtrack album as he wrote the title song. The soundtrack features most of the music from the film and is a decent accompanying item if you're a fan of the film-I love the way it is released on Playtone which was-the fictitious record label featured in the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 8 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Excellent, full of very enjoyable original songs, all fully produced in character by the various made up bands and artists from the movie. The songs by the Wonders are the best ones, naturally, some of which are easily as good as (or better than) the Beatles in their rock n roll days. Definitely recommend!
